Needs some ideas about a wee problem I have with the ASYNCH. So to scene set ...
I've been using and M2 Tech Hiface for the past few months but after reading the posts and good feedback in the Trade section here I thought it would be worth a punt in getting a ASYNCH . At that price it's a no brainer. :) Ordered last Wednesday and got it on the Thursday. So thanks to Stan for the speedy delivery :thumbsup:
However, I've been experiencing problems with ASYNCH and 24/192 files - I get drop outs. Whereas, the M2 has no issues.
The set up I have at the moment:
Samsung Laptop (about 2-3 years old - i3 CPU, 4gig ram) running Win 8.1.
lappy to the ASYNCH it's a Wireworld Ultra-Violet 7,
Ecosse Director II from AYSNCH to M-DAC
JRiver 19 for the media player
Initially, when I got the ASYNCH I used the laptop that had been running the M2 (another Samsung 5 years old running Win7) . But that had problems - I just couldn't get a squeak out of it with JRiver - but could with MusicBee at only 16/42.
So, after a lot of huffing and puffing :steam: in trying to find out what was wrong I swapped over to my main Win 8.1 machine to see if I could find the problem i.e. was it finger trouble or laptop?
Set up the Win 8.1 machine to use the ASYNCH. Found out that with JRiver I needed to tick the Event box in the Device set-up. Did that, restarted JRiver and I had music for 16/42 & 24/96 :-), however no joy at 24/192 i.e. stuttering and dropping out. I should add that I'm using WASAP as ASIO just doesn't want to play ball at all.
Did a bit of reading up on the web about 24 /192 drop outs and stuttering issues with JRiver and other Media players/ laptops etc. Then a couple of evenings ago I fiddled about with the JRiver latency settings, run from memory box ticked etc to try and get 24/192 to work - and it did! it played perfectly, famous last words.... :rolleyes:
Yesterday I unplugged the ASYNCH to see if I could get it working on the Linux Daphile Music server I have running on (yet) another old laptop ... which it didn't btw (M2 does). After that diversion. I plugged it a back in to the Samsung Win 8, played a 24/192 track just to check if all was well and the drops outs where back again! :brickwall:
A 24/192 track with start off ok and then you get a drop out after about 15 seconds (M-DAC loses the lock according to the display) , drop out lasts for no more that half a second, music carries on and then drops again may be 10-20 second later and repeat ... So to overcome this I set the JRIVER DSP to down sample from 192 to 96 and everything is ok. Doesn't like 173 either.
The odd thing is that it was playing 24/192 perfectly the other night so I know it's not the ASYNCH. My suspicions are that there's some interrupt spike or background process going on that's causing this drop out to occur. I've also tried MusicBee and that's doing the same as JRiver - even worse at times.
To be honest, I'm not too worried as the I have only 3 24/192 albums and they sound excellent even when sampled down to 24/96; I really can't tell the difference.
It's one of those things that just niggles me and I want to get to the bottom of it. So if anyone has any ideas please feel free to chip in :-)
I'll go back to the Win 7 laptop again and see what it does this time.
Despite the 24/192 issues, how do I find the ASYNCH sound quality? ..... it's excellent! Bass much better (my test is Donald Fagen Morph The Cat), sound stage opens up more, small things like reverb's are better, it exposes krap production though - where as the M2 will smooth over the cracks a bit. So all in all I'm well pleased with it - a bargain if you ask me.
