OK - new member, quick hifi resume...
early 80s, 13 years old, sony midi system (pretend seperates joined together with odd dot matrix display to indicate CASSETTE/TUNER/PHONO), vinyl & cassettes. mainly post-punk & goth, most best forgotten.
late 80s, 18-19, student days, technics receiver, pioneer deck. hip-hop & noise / hardcore, madchester, shoegaze / indie stuff. Gear nicked - bought ghetto blaster, not sure why now.
early 90s, 23, bit more money, arcam alpha, marantz CD52SE, mission speakers. impressed with jump in quality, started to buy other stuff like interconnects and speaker stands, some jazz and electronica too, CD collection starts to grow
97-12, getting older, marriage + children, dark times - hifi relegated to dusty boxes in the cellar, CDs become something for the car but continue to proliferate exponentially
2012, 42, 'these old records look interesting - think I'd like to listen to them...' Rega RP3 + lots of other Rega (Brio r, Apollo r, RS1). Records start to mutiply, trichord Dino phono stage added, better carts, mods++ to TT, power cables, more interconnects, well & truly addicted to the hifi bug now. Find out classical records only cost 50p from oxfam and are generally still mint condition
2013-14, 43-44, house move, doesn't sound quite so good in the new room... more changes, system starts to evolve - idler drive, valves, bit of diy, start to tire of mainstream hifi & shops geared towards what hifi 5* brands, now lots of records, start exploring forums...
Current system:
Lenco 75, Birchply plinth Audiomods Series V, DV17d3
Rothwell 1:20 MCL SUT, Rialto phono
Tisbury Audio switchbox
Audion Sterling with Svetlana 6550 Winged C output valves
Apollo r CD
Audionote AX2 with upgraded caps, silver wiring
No brand solid silver interconnects, speaker wire
Music:
Most genres, esp - Krautrock, electronica, hiphop, dub, chamber music, baroque, jazz, acoustic / nu-folk, female singers
A few records on the current playlist:
Beck - Morning Phase
Duke Ellington - Blues in Orbit
Vivaldi flute concertos - Michala Petri
Bonnie Prince Billy - Wolfroy goes to town
Grace Jones - Nightclubbing
Alban Berg Quartet - Beethoven late string quartets
