I need a little help, I'm struggling to balance a aluminium housed Denon 103 and a new Ortofon magnesium headhsell on my 3012 and I need a bigger counterweight. Can anybody recommend someone who can supply me a very heavy custom version made of the counterweight so I can house heavy carts and
headshells on my 3012. Finally can anyone remember the weight of the heaviest counterweight that SME naturally supplied with the 3012? Thanks in advance.

Some details can be found here http://www.analogue-classics.com/html/sme_3009___3012.html
Give Dom a ring, he had a supply of large weights and may be able to procure a custom size

How heavy is the aluminium-housed Denon 103 + Ortofon headshell? Have you considered only partial counterweighting and using the imbalance to contribute to the VTF?

Barry,

Yep it's housed I aluminium and its the magnesium head shell desined for the cadenza range. I hadn't thought about the things that you mentioned. I did think about maybe getting an "under slung" counterweight for the 3012, something like on the michell technoarm.

Using a reduction of counterbalance to provide cartridge VTF, allows the total arm and cartridge inertia to be reduced.

The only problem I can foresee, is it might be difficult to equalise the loading of the knife-edge bearings; that is, the lateral balance provided by the 'wayrod' may be insuffficient.

Again, how heavy is the aluminium-bodied Denon/Ortofon headshell combination?

Barry,

I don't have an accurate set of scales so I will taking them into work on Saturday, them I should be able to answer your question.
