eBay attracts much flack, a lot of it justified, as being a sellers market. But occasionally it can work out well for the buyer. As an example, someone has found a bargain:

http://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=260497515023

I paid about five times the final bid for my Troughline. Doesn’t it make you want to spit?

Here’s hoping the new owner appreciates his good fortune.

Says he had them re-coned by Tannoy so you would think they are working but maybe deliberately disconnected. I'd give them a go at £250 but collection only from somewhere I have never heard of so it won't be nearby. The WAF on them is down through the floor.

Cornwall near the Devon border. I will message the guy as at that price(ish) it may be worth putting a new 12" driver in the case and putting the HPDs in a Lockwood box ;)

Ok the chap says that "Yes, the centre tweeters do work. The modification was done many years ago to give that little added zing". He is also selling his amp and pre "Luxman M-120A poweramp, and Luxman C-120A preamp". Hmmm...... Kinda thinking about it all.

These are seen for sale pretty infrequently, so pricing is tricky. 50% the value of a TD124 in similar condition would be my guess. The 135 is just as well made as the 124 as far as I know and has a similar drive assembly, but lacks the ability to (easily) use alternative arms and does not have the same desirability.

They're jumping on the LS3/5A 'bandwagon'. The Goodman's Maxim speakers were great little bookshelf speakers in their day, but were not designed to be heard near-field as the LS3/5A were. Not worth £650 IMO, maybe £150.

I've had a pair of them in the distant past and whilst they sound sweet and clean they are not a hi-fi speaker in any accepted 21st century sense and are definitely not an 'undiscovered classic'. I'd value a mint pair at twenty quid absolute tops.

Any Lenco/Goldring-Lenco light platter would do, and you could probably even use a heavy platter, though that could have an issue with arm height. Buy this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GOLDRING-LENCO-GL-69-TRANSCRIPTION-TURNTABLE-IDLER-DRIVE-/301268804889?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Turntables&hash=item4625052519 and you have a bag of spares as well.

Still can't get onto eBay and I'm waiting to bid on an item. Hope I don't miss it.

If you're registered with a sniping website they will bid on your behalf [I use "auctionstealer"] of course I'd be happy to bid for you using my account should you get stuck.

Good idea. I use 'Goofbid'. I'll see if I can locate the item on there (it's a small PC going very cheap).

I really liked the E70's... One of the best sounds I've had in my room for rock/pop. Regardless of what anyone says, if thats your music taste you'll struggle to do better for the money IMO.

Well made too... Easy to drive, solid cabinets, really chunky inductors & film bypass caps in the crossover, cast driver frames, Foster tweeters etc etc.

I'm not knocking them. They were a bit of a bargain at the time, high sensitivity and capable of seriously loud output, but they were a bit fragile. I've come across a few pairs with blown drivers. Probably from 'party' use. They were good for that, but there are limits as to how long you can pump out around 110db without coils getting a bit hot. I actually blew one of the ten inch drivers myself when trying it out for a home build project. I suspect it may have been sub-standard, as I wasn't putting silly power through.

Just as a side note, the issue with the strobe lamp on this unit sounds like the same as I had with my own TTS-8000. The issue was the wire links that join the two sides of the double sided control PCB deciding to stop conducting after 30 years! A whizz round with the soldering iron fixed this.

Fabulous turntable. Come on someone, grab it - get some "Resinamic Sound" in your life!

I agree the listing is way overpriced, but I'm not sure where you get your number from though. Perhaps the same place as the EBay seller got his?

No, they aren't worth the asking, but even the cabs are collectable. The York isn't worth much, but would still fetch at least twice £200, and and original GRF would pull down a grand even as a single (most probably more). As for the drivers, a pair of silvers should probably take in £6-8k in the right circumstances.

Remember, they are collectors' items. Think of them that way, rather than as speakers you'd want to have in your own room and the numbers change a great deal.

Steve McQueen's Ferrari wasn't worth 7 figures either. As a car.

Not heard of that one. I wonder what structure it's based on (Firefox/Chrome/I.E). They tend to use one of the main ones as a base. The name WhiteHat Aviator is interesting, I'm wondering if they use a form of 'whitelisting' for the browser operation. That would be a first for a browser I think, ultimate security, as 'Whitelist' anti virus protection can't be broken (it does slow things down a bit though).

My first good amp was Champagne gold. A Rotel RA-611, which I loved and had for years (so was the Luxman R-600 receiver that replaced it). Now I only buy black gear. Fortunately (speakers apart) all the equipment I've wanted has been black, apart from the graham Slee phono stages (I forgive them 'cos they're so good and are small enough not to be noticed).

Yes, I spotted those too whilst poking about on eBay. Rega speakers tend to have that speedy, dynamic character that light, stiff coned speakers do. A bit like JBL and Triangle jobbies. If they were nearer, I might be tempted at that price.

It's the most 'valvey' valve amp I've ever heard. Sweet, lucid and lush doesn't come close to describing it properly. I have very neutral Class A EL34 valve monos for 'correctness', but the little Raphaelite is at the opposite end of the sound spectrum. Accurate? Perhaps not, but it's gorgeous. It will eventually be driving high efficiency full range drivers in horn cabs (not Tannoys for a change)!

They are a squared frame version of the bass unit used in the Mezzo, which had a bi-radial frame front. The Radford is not vinyl skinned as per most Goodmans bass drivers of the time, it is doped. I believe it is very similar to the Achromat 400 bass unit, as may be the midrange. They even used an ABR derivative in the Dimension 8.

Pretty much the last of the decent "everyday" stuff from Technics... It all went a bit wrong for them as the 80's/90's went on [range toppers excluded.]

That's rather nice (and it's "intigrated" apparently :)). I believe this was quite a well rated amp if I recall. Got to be worth having for a nifty!

These Tannoy Caernarvons are rare and very nice. They use a low resonance version of the SRM10 driver.

Reckon they'll fetch a bob or two.

Meh. The "stand across the room and throw random drive units at a big resonant box" school of loudspeaker design - I'd avoid them if I were you!

Two items of high end Japanese turntable wonderfulness (and, yes, I'm speaking from experience as I own one of each!)

Sony TTS-8000:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-TTS-8000-TURNTABLE-IN-RESINAMIC-SOUND-PLINTH-/111451430531?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Turntables&hash=item19f305de83

Aiwa LP-3000: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aiwa-LP-3000E-Tangential-Turntable-rare-Record-player-faulty-/151399463456?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Turntables&hash=item23401c7a20

The strobe issue with the Sony is highly likely to be nothing more than the links connecting the two sides of the double-sided control PCB needing some re-soldering - the strobe lamp on my own deck was originally non-working for this exact reason. The Aiwa is a bit more complex but contains nothing rare or unobtainable and I can provide a copy of the service manual, so who's up for the challenge?! ;)

Having heard quite a few seventies Japanese speakers from the likes of Pioneer, Sansui, JVC and Panasonic/Technics, etc., I'm not convinced these Pioneers would be rubbish. That horn tweeter was pretty good and I've heard the 12" bass driver model with it, probably the next up in the range and it sounded decent enough to me. Back then, Japanese speakers had a slightly different and livlier balance to the rather constrained sound of British 'Bextrene' coned models of the time (yes I know not all used Bextrene).

Not exactly icons of design though, Adam. The Aiwa has more buttons than I've got fingers and the Sony… is that a spirit level? Looks like it's come off the set of "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea". Doesn't even have an arm!

Fair point on the Aiwa but, to be fair, the buttons do come in handy for operating its track selection and programming facilities. I imagine it would be quie tricky without these...;)
