View Full Version : Spinning Today - What Are You Listening To Right Now? (Part 3)
Just finished:

Neil Young - Harvest (LP, US 1972)
I'm not a huge fan of Mr Young, but this is actually quite likeable! :)
Over to another legendary musician:
http://www.recordsale.de/cdpix/s/steve_winwood-refugees_of_the_heart(2).jpg
Steve Winwood - Refugees of the heart (LP, UK 1990)
On the audio signature alone you could have suspected Bob Ludwig to be the Mastering Engineer, but not this time.
Ted Jensen did a great job of transferring this to analog!

I just heard this album in it's entirety. The group is also called The Woodlands; a duo to be exact, a married couple from San Luis Obispo, California. This album is so special to me. It's one of the few capable of evoking so many complex emotions within me that it has been incorporated into my Top 5 albums of all time (genre not important). Hannah (vocalist) has such a tender sweet and heart-plucking voice that she brings beauty and gravitas to the music unlike I've ever heard before or could have imagined. If you haven't heard this album or group, I encourage you heavily to do so.
Cheers,
Chris.

O - Damien Rice
I feel with each passing day/month, I've grown to become more entranced with the steel acoustic guitar. Especially when it is performed in a way of the likes of Damien Rice. To throw on top of everything, the chap throws sincerity on top with tear-evoking vocals that sound like they are directed completely from the soul. Each track on this album is and can be emotional; something integral that goes beyond the music itself.

Andrei; Volcano is a beautiful piece. Your daughter showed you a magnificent artist. I only hope others would do the same so he may receive the attention he truly deserves. I think that Punch The Clock is an unfairly underatted EC album.....I saw him on The Punch The Clock Tour in 1983 (known as Punching in Across The UK Tour) at a Tottenham club called the Mayfair......Internet investigation shows a 29 song set, Big Jim Paterson (now Kevin Rowland's side man in Dexys) was one of the TKO horns, Caron Wheeler and Naomi Thompson of backing singers Afrodiziak both went onto other things (Soul II Soul main vocalist and Special AKA....vocals on Free Nelson Mandela).....but the most exciting thing that I'd forgotten was that the support band was Rank & File, which featured the rather excellent Austin icon Alejandro Escovedo, one of my top 5 artists from the last 10 years.
Going to dig out some EC now.

Hi Grant
American VI is every bit a good as the first 5 in the series.
Though not the most played of the bunch (by me) it is excellent, in vocals, musicianship and production (Rick Rubin)
A good buy for anyone.
Have mention to a few people about Johnny Cash, I usually get a laugh from them. That is until they hear anyone of his American Series recordings.
Then the laugh is on them, someone I sadly missed for a long time, but have made amends now
Cheers Andy, I'll put it on my list of future,s then. Got his new one...way to the stars I think its called. Very good too!

A little disappointing if I'm honest, all very same same and been there before, however there is one track I love called 'Surrender And Certainty', very slow and moody. Arrived on the mat this morning, the new album from Angus and Julia (their third). This one was produced by Rick Rubin and sounds a little different to their first two albums. I was in two minds when I first heard it, but it's a grower for sure and needs more than one listen if you are expecting a natural progression from the first two albums. Still very uniquely and unmistakably them, just a subtly changed and evolved sound, which is no doubt Rick's touch.

Hahaha, you know me too well Werner.
Yes she does, but on Death Defyings Acts (Track 7) she has I think taken a lot from Martha Wainwright, who funnily enough was how I discovered them many years back, when they were support for her. No doubt there is some influence/connection there, which is clear on track 7, well certainly to me it sounds like it. I am really warming to it now though and it's on again for the third time, they are a rather unique talent.

That would be a shame, but I understand it was Rick Rubin who coaxed them into doing this, so perhaps it is a one off - they are touring the UK together toward the end of the year. It would be a pity to part ways musically, but as long as they keep writing as I like their solo work too.

Excellent choice SDDW!
I'm spinning one of my purchases from this summer, in Switzerland:

Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2LP, RCA/ Roswell Records USA 2007)
Excellent music, top notch vinyl!
Tool in indeed something special. If you dig that have you tried album Cognitive by Soen?

Great choice there Mike, I have that one too, it gets a very regular play here at the Donkey Stables.

No Kodak did that themselves! Shame, as it was probably the best colour-reversal film ever made: superior to Ektachrome and better IMO than Fujichrome. :(
Great album Tim! ....
Been having a bit of a Kate Bush day today Grant - not long to go now :)
Prompted by a reminder from MikaK, this is an album worth investigating if you are not familiar with Ed Harcourt? It's a steal at Amazon Marketplace right now for 1p, plus P&P - worth way more than that ;)

Now this is why I love Spotify. I'd just finished listening to Jo Hamilton's excellent but only album, Gown, when I noticed at the bottom of the page that she makes an appearance on this album. Frankly chaps it is one heck of a piece and well worth a listen. It begins gently and builds from there, fabulous stuff... :D
