A surprise treat dropped through the letter box! Sometime ago I mentioned playing a compilation disc of Steve Earl's music. This had been picked up in a charity shop on a whim, thinking I might like it. Well I did, and to my delight Steve Piggurs of this parish said he had a spare copy of 'Copperhead Road' which he would send to me if I was interested. It arrived today, in perfect condition. This isn't the actual Solid Air album though (which I have since acquired), rather it is a re-recording of some of Martyn's songs by the man himself in 1993. It has some from the Solid Air album, and some from other albums.

That's as much as i know about it, I had never heard of John Martyn and his work until I joined this forum several years ago :o It was probably you that brought him to my attention!

This album was selling quite cheap (about a tenner iirc), and is not a 180gm pressing, but the production is first rate.

I've been a big John Martyn fan since his folk days. Had to come to terms with his morphing into jazz - especially in using his voice as an instrument by slurring the words: "Walking on solid air", sounded more like "walkin' on sausages". And towards the end of his sadly short life, it was difficult to catalogue his musical style, most of which I didn't like.

He will be sadly missed. RIP John.

Crashdiet - Rest In Sleaze. Back in 2005 came an album by a band that were effectively Swedens Motley Crue; Rest In Sleaze absolutely fkn rocks - just like Crue's Shout At The Devil. Been a long time since I've give this a spin and it still hits the bullseye!!!!!!

Sadly the singer died and the band (IMHO) never ever recaptured the sound, feel and power of this debut album. R.I.P. Dave.

So I'm starting the day with an old favourite and the opening track has come back to prominence recently due to the artist performing it at the Oscars and perhaps also the recent BBC Radio 2 Maida Vale performance by Paloma Faith.

I saw them live in about '87 at Leeds Roundhay Park (Invisible Touch tour I think) and they were just amazing. But the sheer power, scale and dynamics of their live performance was never going to be fully captured in a recording.

I have only one live record of theirs (Seconds Out), and good though it is, the SQ was as much as could be expected at the time. Maybe Three Sides Live is better? I've never heard it.
