Probably my favourite Floyd album, I just wish my new(ish) 180g reissue didn't sound like I had a duvet over the speakers and was listening from another room, and my amp had a treble control which was turned right down :(

I have both an original and the 180g re-issue. I do not have the same problem you describe with the 180g version, I would suggest that if you can you give the record a thorough wet clean, I have found some new records can prove with a clean, from what I understand this can be due to residual release agent being left on the record from manufacturing. worth a try, but maybe you got one from a bum pressing run. worth a try.

I could never understand why "Wish You Were Here' is so well regarded. It's not a bad record, but only has one memorable track - the title track.

Ha - not heard that in years, I do regularly look around for a decent copy (which I would want to include all the gubbins that it was sold with), but no luck so far.

Anyway, I had a 5pm appointment with a customer today, which had me with nowt to do for an hour, so had a poke round local record shop, where I got a CD copy of this, which will do for now. AND a very nice vinyl copy of "Love it to Death" for a tenner - result! :)

You could be right Adrian, I'll stick it on my RCM, (if I ever get round to buying one :doh:) Though I do suspect it's my failing hearing that's mostly to blame. You will of course be aware of all the low-level HF detail in those grooves, details I remember well but no longer hear. They were an important part of the sound :(

It's funny you should say that, as I recently listened to Duran Duran's first album (which I must have played thousands of times when I was younger (because I thought it was that good) and, I suddenly realised I couln't quite hear all the small details that I still remember in my head from when I was younger - QUITE INFURIATING!!!!

yes, it was in aid of larry adler's 80th birthday. larry was a close friend of the gershwins'. ira gershwin wrote lyrics. some lyrics were written or arranged etc by others inc dorothy heyward. track 2, do what you do was a gus khan number, he was another friend of theirs. ira may have done those lyrics. george martin was producer. adler plays harmonica on all tracks.

Pink Floyd - 'Wish You Were Here'

Here's a bit of a mystery: I was playing Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" earlier, and when the track "Elected" began, there was a one-second very noticeable change of pitch. Reminiscent of the kind of 'wow' you might have got sometimes in the olden days of record autochangers when the playing record might slide over the one underneath.

If it had been vinyl I was playing I would be worried about my t/t, but this is a CD - how is this possible? I tried a stream of the track to make double sure, and the anomaly isn't there.

Adrian, if you're reading this, I know you are well familiar with this album, and I will try to record this issue tomorrow and WhatsApp it to you, see what you think.

At the risk of getting even more stick (this time from the forum) I will add that I'm now streaming Kylie's new album "Tension", and I might have to add this to my Christmas wish list :) What I'd really like is for Kylie to hand-deliver it wearing a custom-made Santa outfit, but that's unlikely.

I would rather watch paint dry than listen to some of the stuff people listen to on here but, I accept we're all different and like different types of music, and that's fair enough by me!! As usual we finish with vinyl and continuing the 70's theme we have this 1979 album their fifth studio album and featuring their third lead singer ! Journey fans "me included" might recognise the drumming by the superb Aynsley Dunbar he had left Journey the previous year.

The most recognised track is undoubtedly, Jane, which was released as a single but has also featured in many films as well as the video game Grand Theft Auto.

The last proper INXS album, and done without original singer Michael Huchence after his untimely death; I have to say, I do like this album very much and, if it were done with Michael Huchence, it would have been even better. To be fair, the singer who replaced Michael Huchence for the one and only album was actually OK - it's a shame he turned into a bit of an idiot as time went on!!!!

I saw INXS with the new singer but, it just wasn't the same; it's such a shame for INXS that it had to end in such a sad way - they were an absolutely FANTASTIC band and their music was BRILLIANT!!!!

Ace Of Spades - The last real album from the classic Motorhead line-up.

Although Iron Fist was technically the last album, from what I gather, Eddie Clarke had helped to pen the new songs but, due to differences over the production of the album had since left and was replaced with Brian Robertson (ex Thin Lizzy) who finished off that project with the rest of the band so, Ace Of Spades was the last real full album done by the Classic line-up.

Not sure why you made this post, but if it truly was out of a sense of curiosity, then you are to applauded. Even if you don't like it, then you at least have tried, and now know to avoid anything by Stockhausen in the future.

I was first introduced to the works of Stockhausen whilst at University - the Faculty of Music performed some of his sythesiser work live, and I was intrigued. I still have a couple of LPs of his work, including 'Stimmung':

Me too, since I acquired this very nice copy a couple of years ago... I must have played it a lot when I had it back in the 70s, because I still remember every word of the lyrics. It was critically panned when it first released, luckily I don't read record reviews :)

Playing "Rock 'n' Roll Animal" earlier prompted me to read up on guitarist Steve Hunter (still with us, age 75), and his long time friend Bob Ezrin (who produced this as well as much of Alice Cooper's albums). I can hear elements of Ezrin's production values from "Billion Dollar Babies" in this, although obviously the content differs enormously!

My reading up on Hunter has led me to this, which is now on my to-buy list:

I ordered this in 1985, after a glowing review in NME (the last time I ever took any notice of record reviews). I waited three weeks for it to arrive, and hated it upon first listen. I revisited it every few years, but still didn't like it. Today is no exception, I won't even bother with side 2.

It's just wrong. A version of "Mule Train" where he repeatedly hit himself over the head with a metal tray wouldn't be out of place. Sorry Nick, you're going back on the shelf for another five years.

Yes I thought too it was probably the heating. Far too uniform to be the wind outside. And there is complete silence between the tracks, showing just what an excellent pressing it is. And the vocals are so beautifully clear, it shows much of today's over-produced nonsense that you don't really need a mega-bucks studio.

The second of her trilogy, and the best imo. The title track (co written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop) I first heard in the early 80s at a hifi show demo'ing KEF's then flagship speakers, played very loud and I can still remember how the bass made my ears pop.

Largely an album of covers, though "Demolition Man" was written for her by Sting, so technically not a cover. The Police later released their (inferior imo) version.

The Kinks Everybody's in Showbiz. Thought 'Powerman and lola versus the moneygoround' was their last good LP, but this one is pretty good, 2 stand out tracks, quite melancholy. Another ebay gem, £10 in mint condition, super thick pressing from the early 70s. Side 1 and 2 are the real album, 3 and 4 seem to be chucked in for the fans, its live, and I really have no time for live recordings.

This was waiting for me when I got in from work (love it when that happens), it's the 12" 45rpm single, kindly gifted me by Barry from these very pages.

To say this was NM would be an understatement, it plays like brand new, in fact better than much of what passes for brand new these days :) As for the music... if I'd known it would be like this I'd have bought a copy years ago.

Yes it's very similar. Not much benefit but some. I've got a Fish album on two 45s. Did not realise when I bought it, my turntable only had 33.3 RPM

Fifteen years later I get a Technics SL1200 - woo hoo I can finally play it. Take it out and it's warped to buggery. And it's crap.

You've just reminded me I still need to get a CD copy of this, which has got to be better than the vinyl picture disc I have which is unplayable cack.

Well, I'm quite sure you've read my view on CD vs Vinyl regarding sound quality (not that I want to start that debate off again) so, I'd say get the CD if you want to listen to it (after all, that's why CD was invented in the first place) !! I picked up my copy on CD from a car boot sale for 50p; I also have a copy of the original vinyl version that I bought shortly after its release back in the day!! :thumbsup:

Before anyone chirps in................. :rolleyes: I have plenty of vinyl records, I do listen to them and I do like them !! :thumbsup: :D

So this morning starts with a album that is rarely played on the hi-fi system but is a firm favourite in the car streamed from Double Twist From files on my phone.

The problem is that if you've heard her live her voice and arrangements are so much better than the album versions with many tracks, rightly or wrongly, sounding like they have been recorded in a cupboard with a laptop ! I know it was critically commended for its production despite their being eleven production credits ! Her vocals were also commended despite many tracks sounding "shut in" and "digital" by comparison to her live performances.

I can only imagine how awesome these songs would be recorded in a decent studio with all the muscians playing at the same time in the same space with her stood in front of them singing, the way the great Sinatra albums were done no vocal booth and live !

However, that said, it has sold 11 x Platinum so what do I know !

Next up an album that really needs no introduction other than to say it was voted "Album of the Year" in a 1976 Rolling Stone readers' poll. It stayed on the chart for 97 weeks and was still No. 14 on Billboard's 1977 year-end album chart. Readers of Rolling Stone ranked it No. 3 in a 2012 poll of all-time favourite live albums and in 2020 the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The entire band are totally in the groove with some great guitar playing by the man himself ! Frampton principally used a distinctive modified black 1954 Gibson Les Paul Custom electric guitar (with three Humbucker pick-ups as opposed to the usual P90 and AlNiCo Staple pickups).

Last up today is on vinyl and an original release pressing of one of the bands many great albums. This is their thirteenth studio album released in June 1982 and is considered their "Comeback" album ! It was their first Platinum album since 1978's Hot Street.

Their were three singles from the album, with the iconic "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" reaching number 1 on the Billboard chart.

Way back in the sands of time (1985) when I bought an LP12, I wasn't interested in singles. I was buying LPs only. So having only 33rpm wasn't a deal breaker. But things have changed a bit since then.

With the advent of CD, albums started to become longer (often over an hour compared to vinyl's usual 40 minutes or less). In order to provide the vinyl purchaser with the same running time, often the albums had to become doubles.

Then at some point the manufacturers thought "hey, we can cash in on this, make it a double, give it some nice packaging, chuck in a couple of postcards or a poster, and while we're at it we'll make it 45rpm. It's not like we don't have the space on the discs, and Derek over at the pressing plant reckons they sound a bit better that way".

Not good news for the minority (us), but it's all about the numbers I suppose.

This and Hot Rats might be the only two albums that I've owned since the 70s. Everything else had been sold/given/swapped/lent/lost/stolen. Maybe no one thought these were worth nicking, and that's fine by me :)
