Hi Barry, thank you :)
Speaker cables are quite big, but enough flexibles. And most important are very good in my setup.

Beautiful system, Eugenio.

What is the mat on the Technics turntable? - it may be worth trying a Reso-mat, they can work extremely well, and are inexpensive.

eu_73
29-07-2014, 08:09
Thank you Jerry.

It is a graphite mat, and above this there is another very thin mat made of carbon fiber.
The two pieces are held together by a very thin layer of spray glue.
if it is allowed by forum rules I can post the links of the web pages of the manufacturers ;)

I find that Reso-mat is quite interesting, maybe I'll buy one in the next months; I have a small collection of mat, in different materials, from rubber to leather

p.s.: my first name is Eugenio, not Euginio :)

I'm sure that is fine and would be of interest to many folks on AOS.
If it is your own make of mat you should say so, though. ;)

Oops, sorry! - I have corrected my post. :)

The graphite mat is sold (and maybe produced, I'm not sure) by Audiosilente (http://www.audiosilente.com/mat_6-8_mm.html), a small italian company specialized in graphite products and in TT tuning (in particular Thorens TD124 and Garrard 301-401)
While the carbon mat is the "Speed" from Extremephono (http://www.extremephono.com/Mat.htm), I've bought it with the matching "Donut" about 10 years ago and it always give some extra benefit to any mat.

I should point out that I have no business relationship with any of the two companies :)

That's a very nice looking system Eugenio. I like the stand and CD storage units too.

Thank you Geoff.

Cd storage units are made by Seletti, product name is Seletti Notorius (I think they are out of production) and are/was sold also in uk (link (http://furnish.co.uk/features/729-seletti-cd-case-from-found-home-store)).
If you want to spend more, much more, you can find some interesting items in the catalogue of Vismara Design (http://www.vismara.it/baroque.html).
Or better you can do it yourself, I think it will be quite simple if you have the right equipment and you have good manual skills. :)

While the hifi rack has been designed by my wife and built by a craftsman with the lab near my house

Hi,

It looks like your isonoes are tightened right up till they are fully in contact with the table base. I may be wrong of course and you may have a slight gap in between the feet and the turntable. It was recommended to someone in another part of the gallery to loosen the feet a few turns to so that they are isolated from the table.

Hi Nathan,
you are right, from the pic it seems to that Isonoe feet have been screwed too tight, but in effect there is about 1,5 mm of space from Isonoe and base of TT, so damping should be ok.
Until last month the Isonoe feet were too much tightened as a forumer told me --> http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?33086-My-Technics-SL-1210-Mk-2&p=561442#post561442
So feet have been adjusted according to the Isonoe instructions and the turntable is properly levelled

@ Andrei: Thank you! I really like my JM Labs Speakers. They have a beautiful finish and they play in a very balanced way, the sound is very detailed, but without listening fatigue.
Regarding graphite mat: it's about 700 gr.

@ Lee Henley: many thanks!
Yes, I am quite proud of the value for money achieved by this setup
I also find that it is quite pleasing to the eye

Hi Eugenio, I have them for approx 6 years, I bought them on Ebay from a guy in UK and shipped by Royal Mail to my folk's place in Northern Ireland. I am very happy with them but put them up for sale once because I saw a set of Focal Scala Utopias for 4000€ in Uk , I was prepared to fly to London to check them and he told me they were in his Isle of Man holiday home so I said I'd see them there and everything went dead , it was a scam :(

How things in beautiful Italia? I've had some great times there in Milano,Bergamo,Clusone and Verona.

Hi Ken,
My english is quite poor, but I understand that your "adventure" had a happy ending. :)
I have never listened Scala Utopias, while I have listened to the Grande Utopia several times (in hi-fi shows) and I have always been impressed, it is a super loudspeaker!

Here in Italy are some (big) problems, in these days the government is deciding for a new electoral law, I hope will reach an agreement.
Consider that the previous government and the actual one was not voted by anyone, also the current Prime Minister Mr. Renzi is not even a member of Parliament.
I am very worried for the future of Italy.

Personally I'm fine, I live close to Milan. In the next few days it will begin the Expo, I hope it will be success... :-)

Loz

Hi Loz,

thank you.
I like my setup very much, and I am sure that although the components are not very expensive all together they are very synergistic and the result is very very good, a taste of hi end. :)

Apart from the Technics my favorite component is the Denon DVD A1 modified by Aurion Audio, that is one of the best (maybe the best) digital modder in Italy.

Now it have real balanced output (also the preamp ant the power amps are really balanced) that are really better.

When it was unmodified it was a good machine - inside there are 8 Burr Brown PCM1704 converters, in my opinion some of the best ever made, and it is also very well built - but now it's pretty darn good.

Mods consist in a totally new output stage that is fed by a new power supply stage dedicated.

And now some pictures...

1) Inside view before mod
http://s24.postimg.org/cenv7rgdg/1_prima.jpg

2) Inside view after mod
http://s24.postimg.org/itmw4fn38/1_dopo.jpg

3) Audio output stage before mod
http://s24.postimg.org/kzh6yxqjo/2_prima.jpg

4) Brand new - all made with discrete components - audio output stage after mod
http://s24.postimg.org/iw6rr9qqs/2_dopo.jpg

5) New power supply dedicated to the new audio output stage
http://s24.postimg.org/jui2wfxr8/image.jpg

The main difference is in the presentation of the music that is more liquid and analog in the best sense of the term.
The impression is that the music remains in the air a fraction more than before (a bit like it was His Airness Michael Jordan), making it more natural.
Another major difference is in the low range, which is more extensive and substantial, helping to make it sound more material.

Ultimately, and I think it's clear, I'm really satisfied with this Denon DVD A1, which I use mainly as converter for liquid music

Never mind posting pictures of your new phono stage Eugenio, how does she sound in your system?

Supposed to be a very nice phono stage.

Hi Andy,
I am not Phonostage Expert, my experience is limited to a few ones:

- The one built in in Jeff Rowland Concentra 1 (quite poor in my opinion)
- The one built in in Spectral DMC 20 (very good)
- an old Clearaudio Reference Phono Stage (bought and sold, after a few weeks because it was too dry/arid for my taste)
- Musical Surroundings Phonomena Phonostage with external bps (quist good in sound but not as Spectral, I liked it because it was small and very configurable)
- a diy MM only phonostage made by a friend of mine, inspired by TNT Audio inDiscreet (http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/indiscreet.html) with an external super power supply, used in combination with the step-up dedicated to the cartridge (the last one was very good, it won the head to head competition with the Musical Surroundings).

The Rega Ios plays in another league, it is FAR BETTER than the others I owned.
Everithing it's faster, more dynamic, an excellent spatial reconstruction and the sound has a pleasing amber note, tending to heat, that I like so much.

So I think that I won't change this machine for many years.

---

Finally, a consideration about the two versions of the Rega IOS, the "normal" and the Reference.
The differences between the two Rega IOS are:
- Reference has new beautiful cabinet like actual Rega Reference products
- front panel of Reference has a switch for mute / unmute
- front panel of Reference has a switch for mono / stereo
- rear panel of Reference has a pair of XLR input and a selector to choose if you whant to use XLR or RCA input, while it have only RCA output like the standard version
- italian list price (about year 2010) of the IOS about 3.000 euro; italian list price of year 2015 of the IOS Reference: 6.600 euro

I've found on the web a very detailed picture of the inside board of Rega IOS of the reference version

http://s16.postimg.org/3ytz9ilth/Interno_Rega_Ios_Ref.jpg

and this is is a pic of the inside of mine Rega IOS:

http://s16.postimg.org/x522sldkl/rega_ios.jpg

Mainboard and components are EXACTLY the same! The only difference is that the signal cable used in the Reference version is a Sommer Cable Tricone MKII (cost: 1 Euro / meter) and in the previous one is just are just red and brown cables.

So It seems it is almost the same machine... has anyone ever compared directly the IOS and IOS Ref?

Which is your favourite cartridge?
Hi Steve, I like all of them.
I have never mounted the Lyra that is a self present for Christmast, so I don't have an idea about it, altough my expectations are very high; in my opinion the most audiophile and correct is the Benz Reference, while the Denon DL 103 SA is the one that gives more sense of rhythm.
The old Ortofon MC 20 Super is similar to the Benz, but have a lighter bass and a bit less of detail and refinement (but is still very good considering its age and actual price).

Some fine tunings with power cables.

The old ones were 4 of:
http://s30.postimg.org/9xmq7848x/IMG_2141.jpg
quite cheap cables but with a good quality cable and nice IEC and Shuko plugs

The first pair I have changed, in december 2015 is a pair of Acrolink 6N 4030, with Oyade-like IEC and Shuko plugs.
http://s30.postimg.org/6yb86d5dt/IMG_2139.jpg
These cables have been used between the wall power outlet and the power power line conditioner and between this and the phono preamp.

While the other pair is arrived a few days ago and is a prototype with no-name made by an italian cable maker, Silcable:
http://s30.postimg.org/pkdzkli0x/IMG_2136.jpg

a very nice aluminium / carbon shucko plug
http://s30.postimg.org/b9ztvdcap/IMG_2137.jpg

and the IEC plug which has been further shielded with an aluminum cylinder as pictured:
http://s30.postimg.org/jf88io4u9/IMG_2138.jpg

These cables have been used from the power power line conditioner to the integrated amp and to the cd player/Dac.

The turntable (at the moment I am using the Thorens) has a non-detachable cable, while the Mac Mini is in another room.

The main differences, in the direction of a slight improvement of the situation were:

in the midrange, with voices in particular that have more weight and body
in low frequencies, there was a little improvement in extension. As example listening to Layla (from Unplugged by Eric Clapton) the bass drum appears more prominent than the previous configuration

I have not noticed changes in amplitude of the soundstage or in the focus precision, which even before was at appreciable levels (taking into account the modest hardware available).

31-05-2016, 19:20
Bravo Eugenio!

Much better with the new tonearm :)

I can imagine it all sounds fantastic. Wish I'd kept my DL-103SA, as it was one of the best cartridges I've heard. Look after it! Out of interest, which headshell are you using, and is that some kind of stabiliser attached to it?

Marco.

31-05-2016, 19:51
@Andr'e & Marco: thank you. Also in my opinion it is better with the new (older) tonearm, it is surely more coherent with the TD124. And more I was quite sure It would have been worse, while also the Stax is a very good tonearm.

@Marco: it is an HD graphite headhell, with a prototype of pure graphite spacer made by a friend of mine. In the next days I'll mount the Denon without the spacer, to see if there will be any differences.

Marco

Thanks, Eugenio. Interesting... Do you know how heavy (in grams) the HD headshell is, and also the spacer, separately? :)

Marco.

The headshell is quite heavy, it should be 18 grams, while I don't know the weight of the spacer but it seems to be very light... it should be about 1,5 or 2 grams, in the next days, when I will remove it I should be precise at centigram :-)

Marco
31-05-2016, 20:39
Ok, thanks. That's interesting. I reckon at 18g you're at the limit of how much mass the 103 'likes to see', so you may well find that removing the spacer improves things :)

What are you tracking the cartridge at? In my experience, 2.6g is optimal, with approx 2.4g of bias.

Marco.

Regarding bias (is it the same of antiskating?) I don't know... I've used the hifi news lp test and it was fine with the weight in the first position (there is not a scale with the grams), that is the lighter one of the three steps available.

Yep, bias is the same as anti-skating. I forgot that your tonearm's got a proper set of bias weights, rather than a dial. Those work better and sound better than sprung dials. In that case, I'd be tempted to try it in the middle position, so step two, and see if you can detect any improvement. If not, put it back :)

I will surely try...and report about the differences, if any.

Btw I have just listened the LP 'Caverna Magica' (magic cavern) by Andreas Vollenweider: what a pleasure
And I find that the new amplifier is quite magic too!!! :-)

My wife is a great cook, I am a lucky man :-)
Here in Milan we also have a great tradition with rice, the yellow 'risotto alla milanese'
I usually don't drink wine, but sometimes I do. And just the last days there were some friends at diner and we have opened a bottle of 'Brunello di Montalcino' of year 2000... My friend, it was really superlative!

Ditto, my wife is also a great cook. Would us Italians settle for anything less? :eyebrows:;)

Love risotto alla Milanese - a true classic! As is vitello alla Milanese, con un po di sformato, tutto fatta in casa.... Yum, yum!

Brunello di Montalcino, especially a 16-year old vintage, would be fantastic. It is one of my favourite Italian wines, even more so than Amarone or Barolo. When you win the lottery, try some Tignanello, quello di Antinori, or Sassicaia!

Certainly Not about to argue that..;).
Does beg the question though: Why are you living in the Land of Boiled Meats ?

Land of Boiled Meats? :D  You'll have to explain that one to me!

My wife is half Welsh, half Croatian, and she was born 2 miles from where we live. I was born in Scotland, from Italian parents (Tuscany) and now live where my wife comes from - and we love it here! :)

... and this is the final result

Some improvement on the turntable side:

- Stax tonearm has got a new carbon arm, so now it is a Stax UA-7 CF
- a new Thorens clamp;
- it has been installed again the original aluminium sub platter, and I have gained the instant stop of the platter;
- new cartridge, a Transfiguration Spirit.
