What is a {Non Greedy} going rate for a Goldring 'G88' & 'G99' motor unit with most importantly mint condition front control panel?
I was thinking about going for one of these for a number of reasons.
Garrard '301': Don't really like them + you need a big plinth
Garrard '401': Dislike strobe platters
Thoren's 'TD124' way too expensive for my pocket
Lastly always liked the way the goldring jobbies are designed. I like the compact plinth design of the original 'G88' plan.

Well a G99 was up for sale on Lenco Heaven for £395 and it look mint. You can get them cheaper but they usually knackered and chipped, good examples have gone for £500.

About the price of a '401' then? I think i think i think i prefer the look of the 'G88' but that's only i think. See it's going into a system Quad '33'/'FM3'/'303' & Revox 'G36' & would prefer it to kinda like match in. I was wondering if ' G88' in an orange plinth would look ok, would match the Quad orange fittings that's for sure however a 'G99' with it's grey & brushed control pannel would match the 'G36'.. O lord i don't half set myself problems.. Having OCD does my nut in anorl.
Got a lenco 75/78 arm complete if yo are needing it for a build of that kind of deck. Bought it years ago for a project that never happened.
Gotta say the G99 is a gorgeous looking thing, never heard one though. That's an itch I need to scratch...

I already have a Goldring/Lenco 'GL75' & a Lenco 'L70'.. The thing is with things of this vintage i refuse to fit modern arms to them, must be all original product.

Geoff (oldius on AoS), who's currently selling his lovely Thorens TD-125 in Private Exhibitions, has (or did have) a lovely G99, which I've heard in his system and compared with my Techy. Let's just say that, sonically, it gave the Techy a rather hard time... ;)
The G99 excelled in all areas, bit in particular it had georgeously deep bass, which was beautifully rhythmic and textured - and *so* solid and punchy, it was unreal! :eek:
Therefore, Andre, as far as sound quality goes, I can thoroughly recommend the G99... In terms of looks though, muchacho, that's down to you and how much yer renowned fussiness (OCD) influences matters! :D

Well i temporarily mounted a Mayware 'Formula 4' to my 'GL75' {All reversable as it was} i heard with that alone how good one could be if i ever bought a 'G88'/'G99' unit. Now i need to find a minto jobbie at a price that i don't think is extracting der pisciare

I've had one and the '88', they are lovely units. As has been suggested, prices are approaching 401 territory. I'd say a minter should be worth around £400 to the right buyer.
You probably don't wan't to hear this - but I have, on behalf of a couple of non-members, sold two G99s complete with plinth, arm and cartridge for £150 each to two AoS members.
When I tell you one of the arm/cartridge combinations was an SME 3009/S2 with Shure M97E, and the other was a Decca ffss 'Super' arm with a Decca H4E, you will be doubly-sick.

I remember Chris having yours with the Decca Pick-Up arm/cart.
Great decks indeed. I sold mine for a grand but in a slate plinth with a Redbeard Analogue Superbearing.

It was. I bought one of the earliest examples and it was superb. I do not know the full story but I think a few personal difficulties led to a myriad of problems with the business and a number of people felt very let down. The later examples seem to have had a number of issues.

My dad had 2 G88's both at separate times but one went with a leak st 20 and leak varislope pre paired with an SME 3020 tonearm but at the time did not work on the left channel and STUPIDLY sold it without fixing :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: biggest mistake. They are superb units though rated by some as the lenco of 301's although the G99 is gorgeous also if you could pick one up not doubt it would match the quads you have in mind :stalks:.

...and I'm not entirely sure whether whatever you've got there now is fundamentally superior to it, unless you've bought some sort of 'superdeck' since I last visited. It would certainly have to go some to beat that G99! ;)

Ok going to look at a 'G99' today after work.
I've still got the 401, 125 and I have a sony tts8000.
You're right, the G99 is absolutely up there. I was just not listening to the four enough and I had significant interest in the 99.
There is some truth in the vintage arm thing aesthetically but, a top notch modern arm really shows what these decks can do. The OL conqueror on the G99 was an absolute wonder of a combination.
The problem is you love your 401 too much, which I'm not convinced was fundamentally better than your G99... ;)
I don't think I've heard the Sony, have I?

Anyway, it's cool. Just saying that if I'd had that G99, there's no way on this earth that I'd have let it go - you'd have to have prized it out of my cold dead hands! :)

I also prefered the G99. There wasn't much in it though. The 401 was a lot 'clunkier' to use. Both good units.
I had 7 decks and a hole in the bank balance! I liked four of them equally and sold one of em. Tough call though and I sold another three too!

Ahh! but it went to a 'good home' :) where it will be 'savoured' alongside a 401 and a 124-2 - once I have managed to prize myself away from work and into 'retirement' in Torquay.
I am not quite sure which arm will finally be fitted, but I intend to try it with an Audiomods Series V, and a recently acquired Nima. If I can get 'Slate Age' to cut a new version of the 'arm mount', I also have several varieties of the SME 3009 S2, both the 'pre' & 'improved' versions, plus an 'R' variant that could be tried on it. Then it's only a question of finding the 'right' cartridge--------:doh:

so, may I ask what put you so violently off? .....I ask as I am toying with getting an idler again, and not sure which way to go.
Slate age will definitely make you a new arm board Mike. I imagine two won't cost much more than one as the template would be the same.
I'd be tempted to have a Rega fitting and an sme fitting done and you're covered for so many arm choices then.
I was so glad to sell the G99 to someone for whom it "mattered". That deck meant a lot to me and sounded superb. Well, you know that because you and your wife listened to it first!

I had always been curious about the 'G99, having been around when they were still 'available', along with other now desirable pieces of 'HiFi', which were then current.
Unfortunately, it wasn't until the mid '70's that I had sufficient 'folding stuff' to buy a new 33/303, At the time I was considering a pair of BC1's, but I found a pair of B & W DM70's which had only been 'unpacked' then 're-packed' as the wife of the gentleman who had purchased them, had decided "that they were far too big for the room" - nothing changes - Ha! Ha!
A short time later I found a 2nd hand '124-2 to replace the Garrard 'deck' (part of a Decca portable 'record player') from which I had managed to 'wire' a connection to the 33.
Despite a divorce and living in various parts of the world, I managed to 'hang-on to' the 124, and more recently I have 'collected' some other 'toys' with which to pair the 'G99 :)
I just wish that I had kept some of the other items that I 'traded-in' or rather foolishly 'disposed of' a few years ago.

Good that you have managed to hang on to the 124 - they fetch large sums these days on eBay. A G99/124 'bake off' would be interesting.
Shame about loosing the B&W DM70s; for a while I lusted after a pair as they were considered to be quite something in their day.

I foolishly sold the first pair when I was at a 'low point' in my life in '76, but later when things 'improved', I purchased another pair of earlier models, but unfortunately they weren't as good. Later I bought another pair which were Sony re-labelled 'DM70 Improved' models. I shipped both pairs to Canada when I emigrated 'never to return' in 1981. In '87 I shipped them back from Canada and eventually to Holland in '91, but by them both pairs were a little 'worse for wear'. Finally in 2004 when I was short of space, and unaware that there were 'experts' who could have refurbished them for me, I took them to the local 're-cycling depot.:(
