Hi!

I'm quite new to the world of hifi and I'm looking to get inspiration and input from hardened audiophiles. As a computer headfi, I've got an entry level setup consisting of M2Tech Hiface, a Fiio E17, a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770's for outdoor use and AKG K551 for home enjoyment into the wee hours.

At the moment I'm in the process of upgrading to a desktop DAC/headphone amp and eventually a new set of hifi cans.

Thanks! My favourite genres are minimal techno, punk, fuzzy lo-fi rock, shoegaze, female singer-song writers, ambient, noise, post-rock, sludge and hip-hop. I'm really into a lot of music, even though that sounds like a cliche, it's true in my case.

I actually have a pair of active speakers, but I prefer to turn off the lights and put my headphones on. Then I don't have to worry about neighbours complaining that I'm blasting Deafheaven way too loud :)

I can answer some of your question. I think a clue to the music taste is partly in the name (check out Four Tet and Burial).

Shoegaze is epitomised by My Bloody Valentine and their seminal album "Loveless". Other exponents include Slowdive and Ride.
Post-rock is often thought to originate from the late Talk Talk albums, particularly "Laughing Stock" and from Slint in the US ("Spiderland"). Slint are also part of the math rock scene. Incidentally they have just re-emerged with a re-release of Spiderland and a tour!
I believe Sludge is actually short for Sludge metal and is a combination of doom metal and hardcore punk. It is supposed to orginate from early Black Sabbath and late Black Flag. It is slow and dense, ie sludge. I don't know too much about this one but I think Neurosis are Isis are examples.
Neurosis also teamed up with Jarboe from Swans; a key band in experimental noise and post-rock. Try the two latest albums from Swans ("To be kind" and "The Seer") if you are feeling brave enough - they are quite astonishing live.
I am not quite sure about fuzzy lo-fi rock. Lo fi typically indicates home-type recording and their are many bands in that category. A classic being perhaps Bon Iver with "For Emma, Forever Ago". It could fit people like Kurt Vile (eg "Walkin on a Pretty Daze") or Best Coast ("Crazy for You") but perhaps fourtetisburial will elucidate.

All clear now with Cloud Nothings and Ty Segall.

Of course I should have mentioned more post-rock but there are so many!

I do like GY!BE but I am also quite partial to Mogwai and Dirty Three. the latter particularly good live. Explosions in the Sky might be a good introduction to someone who wants to dip their toes into more recent post-rock. I had to mention Laughing Stock though because it is such a great album.

Fuck Buttons are a great live band although best suited to the late hours!

Of course I love Burial and Four Tet although I think we really know that they were just at the same school rather than the same person :)
