Hello folks , my first thread and sorry if its a bit of a bum question!
I have recently been thinking of tidying up my Triumph stack system (A Currys brand mostly Hitachi seperates ,must take a pic 50 watt amp , direct drive tt with an Audio Technica cartridge ,and some Marantz speakers)
Its never going to be a worldbeater , but it is all I have to listen to my vinyl with at present. The problm for now , is that the sub woofer in one speaker is done and the tweeter (paired) in the same speaker is ripped ! So listening through the speakers is not an option at present .
I have seen a pair of new woofers for £40 , but I question if its going to be viable to spend money on them.
So , I know this might prompt people to say throw the whole lot out , but I have been considering just buying some nice quality used speakers and seeing what sound I can get out of it !!

Anyway , I have seen a set of Mission 752F speakers for £80 locally .and some very nice looking Wharfdale Rubiance RB27 's for £130 or more .Both floorstanding ones which I want .

I do want to upgrade the TT soon anyway , but thought do the speakers , see the result , change the TT when something I like comes along and then the amp if needs be??

I remember Triumph very vaguely. They did a combined amplifier/tape deck which was novel.

If the marantz speakers are knackered then it would seem to be that your priority has got to be new speakers. Not sure what your Marantz are though - given that Marantz didn't do much in the way of speakers they will either be totally forgetable budget efforts or quite special and expensive back in the day. Might be worth finding out which before you bin them.

Judging by the build quality I think the former is the case !! I shant bin them ,and might just look out for a woofer , I think I have repaired the tweeter for now!
My only concern was if I should be looking for similar 50wattage speakers ,or did it really matter if they were capable of handling more ? Surely that isnt a bad thing or is it:scratch:
The Marantz are 8 ohms so that is important to match I believe?

Nah I wouldn't get too hung up on the wattage or the impedence.

Difficult to drive loudspeakers tend to be expensive so since you are looking at budget stuff you needn't get too concerned.

You are only in the next county from me - I have a fair bit of kit lying around you can borrow and some you can have for free if you want but you would have to come and get it.

I am North of my county. My other half comes from N Staffs , just over the border ;)

I can listen to the Missions before I buy , they look tidy so I might go start with them for now , if I like them

Yep! agreed here too. The 752 Freedoms are excellent IME. Very balanced, detailed sound with lovely imaging. £80 is a steel for these. Still have mine and will have to spend some good dough to genuinely better them.

Bought the speakers yesterday and collected them last night.
Not mint but very well looked after apart from a bit of plinth damage but you need to get on hands and knees and squint to see it!!
A bit of blotchy stuff on one bass cone but no damage as such
The gent hooked them up and played several types of music and they were fabulous. He warned against clipping them with my poxy amp:)

Rooted out my best quality speaker cable reel ,and soldered up the ends and applied some crimp rings and have hooked thm up . Very pleased.
My amp is a late 70's Hiatchi solid state amp. It says 220 watts on the back and 50 watts at 8 Ohms ??
I will not turn it up too high , untill I can get a decent enough amp and another reasonable turnable , however I cant see me going daft(famous last words)
