I was raised on classic rock and prog rock, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Bowie etc... but branched in to all sorts,

electronica: Lamb, Nitin Sawhney, Massive Attack, Lemon Jelly etc,

Metal, from Megadeth, Opeth, Devildriver, Tool, you name it.

Punk Rock, mostly the english stuff, but a few american ones too

Pop-wise, the classics, Beatles, Kinks, and more modern stuff like Crowded House, Barenaked Ladies, Duran Duran, Duke Special

Folk: I adore Richard Thompson, John Martyn, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan, Tunng, and I am currently in a folk phase, so all of those and plenty more like them are in heavy rotation

I have a soft spot for quirky artists like Bjork, Regina Spektor, They Might Be Giants, early Weezer, Tom Waits, Zappa...

But my favourite band would have to be XTC, rich and varied, from punk to pastoral to psychedelic and back again, they've done all sorts... I own roughly 80 CDs by them, plus bits and pieces on vinyl.

I've missed so much out, classical, jazz, prog, but I'm in danger of writing an essay here, so that'll have to do.

Wow... that's quite an XTC collection, Dan. I would be interested in reading your thoughts on the band if you ever put them down - we like our 'artists introductions' here :) I've developed an appreciation of the many flavours of XTC, having initially got into them via Nonsuch, then Apple Venus, and back to the start via White Music and Go. They are an incredibly clever and eclectic band. And great live - before Andy Partridge got the frits and knocked that on the head!

You must have a lot of Andy's Ape label releases, and the Fuzzy Warbles sets... I have the latter, vols 1-4 but don't know where I'd begin to put 80 discs together!

I take it that you were lucky enough to see them live? alas, I believe they stopped touring the year before I was born...

Although, I must agree from the limited live footage I've been able to get hold of. (Urgh! A Music War, Rockpalast, Old Grey Whistle Test etc)

I know what you mean about making XTC fans, they've always been one of those bands who seem to have a knack of knocking out songs that you seem to know already, though you've never heard them before. I put Teenage Fanclub in that category as well.

Sadly, I was only a nipper myself (... 8ish!) when they stopped touring, but I have a few recordings off radio and TV, which almost make up for that! I'd like to find a decent copy of the 'Sight & Sound' 1978 appearance, when they did that fantastic version of 'All Along The Watchtower' - saw it on TV and it's on YouTube, but I'm sure a decent copy is out there somewhere...

dans my music guru..
if i find something i like .. and it literally doesnt matter what it is.. if i askhim about it, he knows all the albums they have made and all the history of the band

i once introduced him to a band (spacehog or everclear, something like that.. i cant remember ... dan will!!) next thing i know hes playing me music i didnt even know they had made

oh and there was that time we jointly discovered manu chou (one of those good old lost weekends if i remember rightly)... and even that was a cd his dad had sent him in the post!

i like to think im dans hifi guru, but im not sure my knowledge expands to the same extent as dans music knowledge
