I've been trying to get my fingers round the intro.... I now know the tab by heart but I still don't sound anything like it really....
Much more practice I think. I'm on hols practicing
practice, practice; it will click;)
My younger brother taught me to play it. Don't know if I still can will have to see.

Well I THINK I am getting there at last... My playing of 'Sweet Child O Mine' intro sounds a bit like it should now...I think!!
The only trouble is I have a Strat and I really need a Les Paul of some description to really sound like Slash...... well that MIGHT be next on the guitar front... this is definitely worse than hifi....!! :doh:
I've just got back from holiday and the hifi is on, I think you forget how good things sound.......having not listened to the hifi for 2 weeks it really does surprise me how good it sounds..... a bit of Tony Joe White is on now and it does sound good to me...

Following on from your logical extension you'd need a Marshall amplifier too!
You'll get pretty close to the sound Slash gets using something like a Boss DS-1 pedal and using the neck pickup on the Strat.
No matter what you use, the biggest obstacle you'll find is that only Slash sounds like Slash.
The sound is in his hands, not in the gear that he uses.
The gear has less of an impact than you'd think.

I am also a shit'e' guitar player but I love making my own sounds, I get a real thrill out of it...:D

Ya know, years ago, I had the chance to buy a white Tokai Les Paul copy with gold hardware just like the one Marc Bolan used to use. I just wish I had bought it and had the experience.
I am not sure I understand the point of buying a LP copy. If you want a LP, there are loads on ebay for around a grand, if you want the experience get one of them, then you wont be loosing much if anything if you sell it on. But if its a LP you are after, then if its not made in Nashville or Kalamazoo its just a LP shaped guitar.
May still be a great guitar, but great guitars come in all sorts of shapes.

Les paul copies, no matter how nice, are just that, copies, i have yet to come across a copy that sounds like a real one, and i have heard and played plenty of each in my main line of work, and i also own a few real ones.
I also agree that the sound any decent guitarist makes is not so much determined by the gear, but by the hands, mind, and soul.

Acording to many in the know,
Slash Atually used Two copies to create the ledgendary guitar sound on appetite for destruction, although these were not ordinary copies, if you dont already know of them, and are interested, do a google search, there have been some lengthy and sometimes heated debates on a few Guitar forums over the years as to which one he used on which tracks etc. :)

I've played a real LP and a few copies in my time and agree the real thing is better. But I am just not good enough to warrant spending a grand. I've hardly played in ten years. I don't have a particualr copy in mind 'cause if I start looking then I know that I will end up buying. I did uncover a decent little practice amp when I was spring cleaning a couple of months back which is now sat in the corner of my bedroom saying 'plug a guitar into me, you know you want to' :)

In short, I guess it was just a whole lot easier to handle and play than an original. I found it a fab guitar that looked a million dollars but though I played it at the time, I never bought it.

The Tokai Guitars you speak of Shaun' were indeed very good, infact, i would go one better and say, against the guitars gib**n were churning out at the time, they were excelent! It was because of these guitar manufacturers that Gib**n and Fe*d*r got their act together, and started making good again! :)

OK, I loved that Tokai Les Paul thing but I cannot comment on it with reference to an original of any kind. I have played with both and found that the Tokai was just more kind of usable but then that could indicate that the Tokai was made from inferior wood...? By the way, are Tokai still in existence...?

You know, I also used to own an Ibanez Artist, an original one from way back when that was solid mahogany and gold hardware and the damn humbuckers on that thing would overdrive the input of just about any amplifier producing amazing crunch and sustain. I sold it because it was dropping to bits in the end but a damn fine relationship was has between the two of us :eyebrows:

Well I think I am at last getting this intro...
At least I am hitting more notes correctly than incorrectly :D
I've recorded myself now playing this over and over.... and I THINK somewhere in there is the correct fingering.....:eek:
A question for those of you who have much more experience than myself on the electric guitar :::: Does anyone use an attenuator with their guitar amp?
While I love the tone of my new Blues Junior amp I am finding it really is far too loud for home use....a bit of a mistake on my part...ooops.... To drive the tubes properly I think I need to turn the amp past what would be reasonable without annoying my lovely neighbours...
I may look into selling the Blues Junior in favour of maybe a Marshall SL5 which can switch to a mere 1w or maybe a Blackstar HT5R at 5w... but I may still need an attenuator
The key is the string skipping with the right hand.
I have a HT1R that the Blues Jr replaced that you are welcome to have a try to see how it compares. It may be that the Blues Jr is a Mk II which means the law of the vol control is not great, so its off or mostly on, maybe worth modifying that to give you more range.

Is the Blues Junior MK III better than my MK II ? if so in what way?
And how did you find the Blackstar HT1R ? is the clean channel any good ?? and did you try the HT5R too ?

What I meant is the picking pattern that means you jump from the 3rd to 1st string with the plectum.
I believe they changed the "law" on some of the pots in the MkIII so you have more control at lower volume. of course it depends on just how quiet you need. For silent practice I use a pocket pod and headphones.
The HR1 was nice, but the clean tone was too warm for my liking, I was looking for the fender top end tone, that the Jn does better.

I think the HT-1R sounds nice too, but lacks a bit largely due to the tiny speaker and cabinet.
You can get a sound very close to the lead guitar sound on Sweet Child at very low volume levels using a Strat, but it's obviously lacking the bottom end of a 12" driver.
The switchable 1 watt output on the SL5 seems to work really well too.

You might get away using the Fender at low levels using a Boss DS-1 in between the guitar and amp.

Dusted off my axe this afternoon and I can still play the intro to Sweet Child of Mine! Not very well and it took me a couple of minutes to remember it, but it was still there after almost thirty years! Human brain - amazing.
Dug out the amplifier - it's a Rhino. Needs a new fuse in it so I went down the pro shop - they had no 13 amp fuses. In a pro shop? WTF? Too hot today to do anymore so I will get it up and running tomorrow. Got a Zoom effects box somewhere I know as I've seen it recently and I found a brand new guitar lead in the kitchen draw. Still got the tagger on. My neighbours are going to love me :)

The amp only goes up to ten though so I don't know what I'm going to do if I need that extra push over the cliff...

Still love them, although i dont own one at present, that may change in the near future though!

I went out with the intention of giving a Blues Junior III a run, and that's now on the "need one" list.
The 60th Anniversary Strat I played on played beautifully and sounded wonderful.
The fact that it looked amazing too was just a bonus, and that's despite the gold plated hardware - I don't think gold plated hardware is hard wearing enough for a guitar, and can become tatty rather quickly.
If I had the cash I'd have one in a heartbeat :)
For a Gibson copy, the latest Epi Plustop Pro's are very good?
Played (I SAY played...) a 5.5K Gibson '57 reissue, and the Epi felt and sounded quite close, close enough my non expert ears didn't notice anyway.
That said, the Epi I played had the Gibson pickups so that might explain it!
Bought my Epi WITH the Gibson pickups, very nice. :)
A good stepping stone for not silly money, if I outgrow it I'd be for for a full bhuna Gibson LP later.

Gibson have owned Epiphone since 1957, and up until 1970 Epiphone guitars were made in Gibson workshops.
The current Epiphone manufacturing is in a plant built in China by Gibson.
So Gibson recognise the need for guitars built to a lower price point than their USA made guitars, and some of the Epiphone guitars are very nice indeed.
Ultimately materials and hardware are usually of a higher standard with a Gibson, and the finish is a labour intensive nitrocellulose lacquering and polishing operation.
The fitting and finishing of the frets and binding is also labour intensive.
It wouldn't be unfair to say that the biggest cost in a Gibson guitar is US wages, although it's only a part of the story.
Your Epiphone Plustop looks to be a good working guitar - there are plenty of gigging players who take Epiphones to gigs and leave the Gibson at home to record with.
So yes, it's a very good stepping stone :)

Even with all of the hardware, and pick ups fitted, There are some fundamental diffrences between the construction and layout of a Gison Les Paul, and an Epi that ensure an EPI will never perform ultimately as good as a Gibson, if you study each indepth' you will see these subtle' but very important diffrences.

It is a distortion pedal, and harks from the days when there was no such thing as channel switching amps.
Most players used to set their amp up for a decent clean sound, and they'd use something like a DS1 for their dirty sound.
