Steel chippings (which is what Atabites are) are approximately 50% more dense than dry sand.

Personally, I use lead shot.

I've found decorative stone chips from the garden centre work well. They are clean and bagged dry. They also interlock with each other and damp really well. Not too dear either.

I've got 3 tons of sharp sand on order for our garden project, you'd be welcome to a few shovel fulls if you like!

I assure you the correct Gateshead vernacular would be shovel fulls, don't understand why one would hyphenate it... I failed in English due to a falling out with the teacher (a hilarious tale for another time perhaps).

As for residents of the North East speaking a different languages I must correct you, we actually speak many different languages lol. Wouldn't want you to confuse your Geordie with your Makem, Sanddancer, Smoggy, Woolyback or indeed some of the Pityacker spoken in the former mining communities.
