Hi everyone. I have at last joined AOS having been a lurker for a long time and thoroughly enjoyed the threads. Some very good stuff here and knowledgeable members.
About 15 years ago I sold up my then kit (Rock Reference, EAR 549s, Townshend Glastonbury IIs) because of a move, thinking I would get back to it in a year or so... So, having so obviously gone into a decline, I obtained permission from the head of the house to dabble again. Currently I am hacking about an Origin Live turntable kit, fitting a Pete Riggle VTA adjuster, OL Silver taper, London Super Gold retipped with a paratrace stylus by John Wright and fitting a Rock trough if I can work out the positioning accurately. At the moment, the only source is a Townshend CD player (you can see I like Max's kit). Speakers are One Thing Audio rebuilds of Quad ESL57s with Townshend Supertweeters (although I have to say I can't hear any difference) and a REL Quake which I am told should be fast enough but I haven't tried it yet.
Amplification is still up in the air. I have had Quad 33/303s beautifully restored by Briarsfield Audio, an old MF A100, and a Croft Apparition OTL which sounded wonderful through a home-made passive until it started a rhythmic thumping followed by silence on one channel. So that's of to Glenn Croft. Always wanted a Croft OTL amp. I am now looking at either an Epoch or Charisma pre, both single box, but am not sure what the difference is. I will post a question later.
Musical tastes are pretty eclectic. I listen to a lot of 'classical' music from Renaissance through to 20th century experimental, but have a large jazz collection of bebop onwards although I'm not that keen on jazz that is more atmospheric than driven. 70s and 80s rock/metal particularly Vai, Purple and Floyd. I've got rather too many vinyl records (about 3,000) and CDs (about 1,000 and rising) - great to own but it makes decisions about what to play a bit lengthy even without a record player at the moment! Bought a Monks RCM to clean the vinyl for when I can play it. What fun it all is :)
