Just bought one on looks alone, and what a looker it is !

Anyone familiar ? Obviously going to need a strip down, clean & re-lubrication.... Should make a fun little project hopefully.

Actually, these tend to last well with no rebuilds as they used different greases to BSR and all 60's onwards Garrards, which are notorious for gumming up.

The 1019 is a super deck still. Just add a 3mm or 5mm mat to the existing one (don't peel it off) and lift the arm on the cueing device before activating the rather excellent auto mechanism. This will enable the arm to be lowered on the damped cueing device. As can be seen from my current avatar, I have a fondness for cork mats on these old idler decks and the ones I've bought have been by 'chizwizzard' on eBay for a tenner a pop! yes, I admit I know the chap online (he posts on the AVI forum), but his products are cheap and do the job! I know the 1019 platter is smaller than 300mm, but he may be able to make a smaller one for you if you ask him nicely.

The tonearm on the 1019 offers low friction, pretty good rigidity and it should happily track the likes of a 2M red or Blue I think. In the past, a K9 worked perfectly and sounded really good, but the current AT120E may be a bit too under-damped, causing slight wobble on 'ripply' warps I find. At a low price, the Rega Carbon and by inference, the everlasting AT91 (which may be identical, stylus colour apart), will be excellent tracking at 1.75g or so.

LOVELY old deck with delightfully slick controls and a great potential for excellent sonics. Lube kits can still be got in the US I believe and these should offer proper oils etc. for the deck. Love it to bits! :)

A good buy for £35 then ? :D Thanks for all that info Dave, much appreciated. I havent got it yet so cant comment on how gummed up everything is or isn't but hopefully your wisdom bears out.

This is the one:

... Look's ripe for a re-plinth don't you think ?

I like this chap's one... Would prefer the plinth to be black though TD-124 stylee.

I bought mine for a £5 :ner: to be honest its a superb deck for the money was playing my 7 inch singles on it last night and it performed even with a cheap ortofon on it though it has been serviced re lubrication and correctly set-up even at £35 its still worth and i would even pay more the look & style is fabulous. Also the one above is :stalks:

Hifi dave paid a ton for his....... The mech worked fine straight off!

The supplied plinth just needs oiling and/or polishing in all honesty as the suspension and massy platter take care of most issues. The fancy one pictured may well look flash, but the arm won't be level when playing and the stick-on (all over) original mat offers great platter damping. Adding another mat really will work better IMO.

I'm going green, despite loving my 701 still :D

P.S. Ditch the knackered old audio exit cables too IMO. One of 'our' favourite flexible cheap Van Dammes should be excellent for this purpose. I've used the Tour grade screened black and also the more flexible Pro Patch mic cable (as AO uses and I have on my Dual 701). Both are easy to work with and the former readily available in stereo RCA sets.

Yet more good info Dave... I wont be changing anything initially but have a PDF copy of the plinth cut-out just in case. I'll investigate the cork platter mat but need to think about a cart first, its currently got a Shure M94 with unknown hours on the stylus... I do have a fetish for V15's :eyebrows:

What am I looking for compatibility wise ? I'm blissfully ignorant when it comes to vinyl replay ! Theres a cheap-ish DL-103 on the bay but I've no idea if they're any cop.

A V15 IV will be ok if you use the damper-brush, as would a hens-teeth and over-expensive V15V at todays collector prices. The M97 in any form is fine though.

I don't know the M94 (sorry) but I don't think they were bad at all. Certainly of all the current carts out there, the most cost-effective would be the Me97XE or the 2M Red I think. The ubiquitous DL110 is another one but prices are climbing way above inflation in recent years :( It was only £70 a VERY few years ago...

Do you charge for this advice Dave ? By the paragraph I presume ? ;) Joking aside, as said before vinyl is the area of hifi I'm least experienced... Back when I used to frequent dealers I left the setup/fiddly bits to them & just enjoyed the music so you're really helping me here.

Looking around V15's are probably over budget at the moment anyway so we'll leave them out of it... DL110 are nice, I've had those before but pricey[er] now as you say. I used to have a Pickering something or other [XV15 or something like that ?] now that was surprisingly very good. The carts I've never gotten on with are the likes of budget Ortofon/Audio Technica/Nagaoka... Gimme an old Shure any day.

I'll see how the M94 fares when it arrives.

2M Red is fine and more like the previous 520 and OM20. The Blue is 530 and OM30 level I think. I have a 510 and it is indeed brash and not very musical, unlike the rather substantial improvements in tone with the next one up...

Am I saying too much again? :o

Am I saying too much again? :o

Dont be daft Dave, you're a fountain of knowledge & I'm a sponge :D

I'm going to the the "forum classic" ie. ask for advice & then do the complete opposite... A Google search has revealed the M94 is an M97 minus brush. I've got my eye on a Pickering which if memory serves should make a nice noise.

Got the 1019 today, its a beaut ! You're quite right Dave... Having now seen it in the flesh the original plinth is quite nicely made & just needs a little TLC.

Its missing the power cable which terminates into an unusual plastic 2 pin "thing"... I'll probably solder a new one directly to the motor. Done a "dry run" and everything works smooth as silk, no re-lube needed - Bonus :D

Finally got around to having a look at this today... Its quite literally spotless inside & the mechanical workings are very near mint - The tonearm is spot on with no play in it at all... This is a really nice bit of engineering & that removable headshell is genius !

Fitted a new power cable, soldered in some new low-cap phono cables to replace the bellwire DIN jobbie, cleaned up the electrical switches / headshell pins & fitted the Pickering XV15... I'm off now to see how it sounds :D

You don't need the tracking brush on these as stability isn't a problem. I think from memory the tracking weight is around 1.5 to 1.75g.

Very low capacitance exit leads aren't desirable or necessary IIRC. The Pickering likes around 275pF as I remember for best treble performance.

Hope you enjoy it :)

P.S. Later, add a separate earth wire from the chassis to the amp. There may possibly be a little link on the signal terminal block which shorts the chassis to the signal screens and for minimum hum, this should be removed.

Its working pretty well at the moment Dave tracking at 1.5g, absolute thunderous bass that really drives along & underpins everything... It was quite a shock ! Sounds more like a DJ deck ;)

I haven't called time on it yet, I intend to replace the cardboard base with something more solid, give the plinth a bit of love with some danish oil & have a play with cables, carts & cork mats.

Cheers for the advice thus far.

Given the plinth a few goings over with some Danish oil, looks much better now. Also removed the brush on the stylus as per your recommendation Dave

I might try & fabricate a crude wedge to go under the back end of the cartridge to help with vta.

@spendorman: They're ruddy good aren't they ? I bought it on looks alone but have been bowled over by not only how slick everything operates but how fantastic it sounds... Admittedly, I'm not fussy with vinyl as its a secondary source but can still appreciate the good stuff.

Just spotted a TD-150 locally... Gawd I shouldn't have moved to Hampshire, I see more stuff to buy every day !

'TD150' motors are nearly always knackered when you buy used deck.

I dont do decks with sub platters & heavy main platters, why i go for michell Flywheel style drive.they get upto speed as fast as a DD TT.

istari_knight
18-07-2014, 20:58
You'll have to do better than that to put me off  Its a TD-150II btw, same as I had 6 months ago... I'll see what I can get it for, not paying more than £40.

Yes, I was surprised how good it was/ is. I had problems with my TD124 II when I inherited it from my uncle, took a fair bit of sorting out, never had problems with the 1019.

They were Dual's top deck and considered at 124 level back in the day. Amazing engineering and so solidly built.

istari_knight

I can quite believe it, I know its a "changer" but the sheer size of the motor & weight of the platter is like nothing else I've seen.

I had two. Cleaning and re-lubing was easy. The first one was LN in the box, the 2nd one needed more care in cleaning and lubing. They do have a very nice peppy sound that is captivating. The reason I sold mine were personal. The deck seemed cramped because of the 10" platter and short arm. And even though the arm tracked well at light weights the adjustments were a little crude for me. Really just personal preferences, but if it was just the sound from vinyl...they are great!
