View Full Version : You Can't Judge a Book by it's Cover - Album Sleeves

Being someone who holds fairly high aesthetic values, I've been influenced in my buying habits to a certain extent by record sleeves (but very rarely by CD covers).

I just wondered what sleeves have made you buy (or not buy) albums in your collection.

Have your expectations been met?

What are, in your opinion, the best LP sleeves?

Starters for ten.

Albums I've bought purely because of the sleeve:
Grateful Dead - 'Blues for Allah' Expectations met, great album
http://hodja.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/allah.gif

Pure Prairie League - 'Bustin' Out' Didn't care if it was a good album - just love the sleeve!! (Quite like the album, though!)
http://www.interviewmagazine.com/cms/app/asset/action.php?a=createImage&id=8069&size_suffix=standalone

I've also bought loads of albums purely because I'd seen them in books of album sleeve art, they were obscure & I'd never heard of them in any other context & was intrigued.

Such as.........

That Hybrid album, is stunning ! In my top 20 albums ever. Their early stuff is quite good but that is the one that hits it for me. Their most recent effort was a let down IMHO.

Hybrid---Black Out (hard to pick a standout track But I love this one)

Well Neil,
I'm halfway through track 7 ('We Are In Control') of 12 & I've got to say that this stuff's really not for me!
I'd never heard of this band, so it's nice to try something new out, but there's a little too much of 'yer electronicals' in there for my liking - I'm a lover of good old fashioned rock n roll I guess!

You never know, though, I might go back to it sometime for a reapraisal - never say never!

I'm constantly amazed at the wonder of Spotify though, when I can whistle up an entire album like that in seconds - fantastic!

Greatful Dead, 'American Beauty' and 'Workingman's Dead'; both bought for their covers.

Quicksilver Messenger Service, 'Happy Trails'; bought for the cover but didn't get on with it, so gave disc away.

One record I don't think I could ever buy simply because of the cover:

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, 'Weasles Ripped My Flesh'. Sorry Chris - that cover just gives me the creeps!

I'm sure there are a dozen or so others - will post them when they come to mind (and if this excellent thread starts to flag).

Glad to know there are others out there who buy books of record cover art. Your comment about CDs artwork tallies with mine - the CD is just too small to adequately display the artwork.

Strange as it may seem, I completely forgot that The Grand Wazoo was your user name! I have several other Zappa/Mothers records, though I must admit to preferring Zappa's 'song-based' stuff to his jazz noodling stuff.

One album I bought on the strength of the cover was Rod Stewart's 'Never A Dull Moment'. Generally though, back then I was so skint I thought long and hard before buying a record.

Hotlinking is where you link to an external site without getting their permission first. Some sites allow it, others don't. Some sites allow it at first then pull the rug when the link gets used too much. It's a bit naughty if you do it too much (though I'm sure no-ones going to get their panties in a bunch over casual posts to an internet forum :))

Personally, I've found that nine times out of ten unless images posted here are hosted on the likes of Photobucket or Imageshack they show up (at least on my laptop) as a little red cross in a white box... This happens quite often in the gallery area.

Therefore, when posting images, I'd be inclined to get into a habit of always doing it though PB or IS to save the hassle

Spooky - Whilst reading this thread Afterlife was already spinning in my player (try Speck of Gold too, if you can find it, and their latest (Electrosensitive) is a cracker too. I had "Finished Symphony" by Hybrid as the "wedding march" when I got married 2 years ago - love Hybrid - and Darren Tate's stuff - Horizons 01 and the Mondo Sessions being two CDs I'd recommend trying.

OK, well to get back on topic, I used to buy 1 CD a month that was completely "random" based on the cover - tried a few times, this was without doubt the best discovery:

Hi Alex

I managed via amazon to gather up as many of Steve Millers albums as I could(Afterlife). Simplicity two thousand, The album the single remixes-the journey and Speck of gold. All very good but for me Afterlife Lounge is the best. Darren Tate's pretty cool, came across him first with Angelic-Its my Turn.

I didn't know Afterlife had a new album out...I will have a look. Thanks for the Darren Tate suggestions as well.

If you can find it Northern lights by Lux is very good, Steve Miller (Afterlife) was involved, but it a rare album now. Some tracks are on the early Cafe del Mar compilations.

Aside from the rather interesting artwork, I couldn't help but notice something written on the top L/H corner of the CD, which says: 'AAD'.

That brings back fond memories when CDs were mastered and produced via an analogue source and subsequent associated equipment, until the final digital process, and marked as such on the CD, i.e. 'AAD'.

My experience of such CDs in my collection is that they invariably sound significantly better than their 'ADD' or 'DDD' counterparts, which kind of tells its own story... ;)

What are your thoughts in that respect in terms of the Blodwyn Pig album? :)

Interesting question, but I'm afraid I don't have a bleedin' clue to the answer Marco. I've got two copies of this album & they're both AAA!
One is an early vinyl pressing and the other is a recent heavy vinyl repressing.

What I meant was if the 'AAD' CD you have of the Blodwyn Pig album sounds better than most of your modern CDs, which are, of course, generally all produced as 'DDD'.

I usually find that my 'AAD' CDs sound much more natural and musical, pretty much like good vinyl does on my T/T :)

Yes, I know what you meant but I don't have a CD - that picture was snaffled from the web. My copies of the album are all analogue - hence AAA.

The AAD CD's that I do have do seem better than the DDD ones though.

After spotting the under-noted album in my collection in I wondered if we'd ever had a "dodgy album covers" thread, and unless my search ability has failed me (probably) this thread is about the closest I can find.

So, one of the worst covers in the history of covers - what was he thinking? I suppose it was the 80's... I give you Rick James and 1981's "Street Songs"

1982's follow up "Throwin' Down" wasn't much better!

Not bad funk, though - once you get over the covers!

This has to be one of my favourite covers too I suppose:

T Rex - 'Electric Warrior'

Nice cover - shame about the content! :D
