I'm clearing out some things, mostly to make some room, but also to help make a recent purchase a little easier on the wallet.

So, here is a pair of Acoustic Research AR-44BX speakers.
They're stand mounters, but big ones, at 70cm tall and a footprint of 32 x 33cm. They weigh a lot, which tells you something about how they were built.

The downside:
They're not pretty - a couple of the corners had knocks while in the custody of their previous owner.
They're a bit tired and 1980's looking.
The bass drivers have been replaced with non-standard units.

The Upside:
They're tremendous fun.
They're able to do some impressive bass.
The mid-range is just wonderful.
The mid-range drivers have been re-foamed by me.

I've been using them as an utterly scary pair of nearfield monitors in my office. I've been driving them with a Yamaha CR-1020 receiver and also an Amptastic Mini-T (which sounded superb, by the way). They've also been connected to the 100 wpc Levinson amp that normally drives the bass in my main system - that sounded great!

Originally priced at £350 they were designed for the UK market in 1986 by Dave Berriman and made in the UK factory in Dunstable. The vinyl wrapped chipboard carcass is thicker than most and there's a separate large cylindrical enclosure inside for the mid range driver. This also braces the main cabinet (front to back) along with more conventional one running from side to side. Single wire connection only, via 5-way posts.
There's a 10" bass driver (as mentioned above this is a non standard item) and a 6.5" mid range, tweeter is a soft dome. Sensitivity is 87dB for the usual parameters.

The grilles, though not photographed, are to be included but you may not have my delightful blue teacup!
Some great fun speakers for a second system maybe? Put them on 8-10" stands and you'll be surprised at what they can do.

PRICE
I got them for a silly low price, but they're worth way more than that. The refoam job cost me about £20 in total.
So, how about £45 for these?

They will cost a lot to post or courier - they're about 22kg each, so collection from Lancaster or Preston would be best (either way, just a couple of minutes from the M6). However, there may be a way to get them to somewhere nearer to you if you're fairly close to the Brighton / Worthing area of Sussex.

These are also being offered elsewhere but not Ebay yet.

No-one interested in these?
It's a mad-silly price for what's on offer!

As I said - mad-silly price - there's a pair in admittedly rather fine condition for sale in mainland Europe for 200 Euros at the moment.

It appears that we may very well have a taker for these, so consider them reserved for Nigel for the time being.

Hey Chris,

I'm presuming these have gone? Otherwise am really interested. I have some 44BX's myself but one of the tweeter soft dome cones has become slightly detached and so the the sound has been affected.

Thanks! Michael :)

Hi Michael

I've just come across this thread and your post. I think I can help here. Chris isn't around on AoS much nowadays so he may not see your post. You can find him on his own forum 'The Audio Standard' here: http://theaudiostandard.net/

I've heard these speakers in my system and they sound superb! £45 is crazy money - bargain of the year by a mile :).

Cheers

Steve
