Hello out there
Just a quick hello to you all. getting back into Hifi now that I have got sometime to finally listen to things again. So dusted off the old Rega Mira/Maia (clamshell) amps hooked them up to my Kestrel Speakers and started streaming via my appleTV and Beresford DAC.
Now acquired a secondhand Systemdek IIX fitted with a Linn Akito arm (a Scottish made one I think) with a K5 cartridge and fitted an acrylic platter, played some old vinyl :thumbsup:
So thought i would join a forum to see what i could do to improve things and get back up to speed with all things HiFi.
First would appreciate any suggestion for a replacement cartridge? my musical tastes are varied, like a bit of most things, no strong leanings.

Welcome to AoS

I also have a Systemdek IIX (with Linn Basik Plus arm) and got excellent results using Nagaoka cartridges on it. They are not the cheapest but they are very good.

I used to have the MP30 on my Systemdek and the sound was close to perfection - that was 20 years ago so in the new range that is the MP300 and if you look at the price that is an expensive MM cart nowadays.

Essentially the cheaper ones have more 'balls' to the sound, as you move up the range that decreases but you get far more refinement to the sound and better end of side tracking too. So it depends how deep your pockets are.

If you don't want to spend a fortune, you could do worse than having a look at the Grado range. I've always found them rather pleasant, even the cheaper ones are very musical, you just get more refinement as you go up the range pricewise. Plenty of favourable reviews on the net. They tend not to be too arm fussy, which is handy.

I would have thought a Nagaoka MP30 would be an obvious and easy improvement over your K5 cartridge.

Hi Barry

Thanks for the suggestion, decided to go for a new MP110 to start with and see how I get on. Will be posting a new entry re my systemdek IIX in the next few days once I have a picky or two at seems at bit unusual to me, so hopefully I might get some input to help me out.
