Music Cabin

Hi Chaps,

Can I ask some advice that some here may have experience of.
I have just sold my house that has a dedicated sound proofed music room and I am down sizing to a house that hasn't got that luxury.

I am conscious of upsetting neighbours with loud music, so I thought of buying a large timber cabin for the bottom of the garden to put my stereo in, however, I feel that putting a system in a large wooden box wouldn't be so good for sound quality and you would probably be able to hear it outside.

So if I line the walls and ceiling of the cabin (one of those with 45mm thick timber walls) with plasterboard and then place another layer of plasterboard on top of that, do you think that would give me a similar effect as a standard lounge?


Any thoughts or experiences would be greatly appreciated

I was just looking at those timber cabins the other day. Some of the more expensive ones look better than my house.

I know that you can get sound deadening plasterboard as a friend used it for his office/workshop. There are probably multiple different makes. I would be more concerned about the flooring from an SQ point of view. You donlt want a thin, wooden suspended floor. Might be an idea to have the cabin built on top of a concrete slab (maybe that is standard practice anyway for these things) then seal it and cover in underlay and carpet.

Plus one to what Martin said, I had a studio in a cabin about 20 years ago, a layer of 10cm rockwool and 2 layers of plaster board did the trick. Solid floor was good too. Then used timber and rockwool/canvas panels to sort out the acoustics. My mate Steve built Liscombe Park studios the same way (it's in two very large cabins, on for live area one control room) and it has one of the best acoustics I know and very little sound leakage.
