Hi Peter,
Welcome to AoS.
There are some great bits you've managed to snaffle for yourself there. How does it sound and what sort of music are you playing on it?

Hello Peter, welcome.
Interesting selection of equipment you've got there. Can't help you with the boiler though.
Don't get carried away with the "mickey taking", we have some experts here, you'll only come to grief.

Enjoy AOS.
Geoff.

Thanks gents, the music I like is blues some modern George Michael (listen without prejudice- NOT wham!)
allways wanted a decent hifi - think i'm on the way now, think I worded it wrong, am heating engineer, so may not be able to help with hifi questions but happy to help anyone with advice on heating/boilers etc !!!!:)

Ho, not your fault peter. I misread your what you wrote.

Hi Peter
Have you located your quad 11 monoblocks close to each speaker, thereby shortening speaker leads ? If not this is one of the nice freedoms with mono block amps to try.
Welcome to the forum, :) just quietly its one of the best to be on.

Glad to help and not too far away on the other side of Woking
Come down your way to see my dentist in Witley
Don't know the kit that well so hopefully others will

Very good to have a boiler expert here !

chris what difference does it make having speakers closer to the amps
cheers matey

Good to hear
Let me know if you have questions on printing. It's a vast field but I might know

Hi Pete
There are many impedances that is the measure of the opposition that a circuit presents to a current when a voltage is applied, in audio systems. The amplifier / speaker impedance is the most difficult. To assist the amplifier understand it will have a speaker lead, and to a certain extent reduce parasitic oscillation a network called a Zobel is placed at its output, however a second more complex impedance awaits namely the speaker which can and often also has its own zobel network. http://education.lenardaudio.com/en/12_amps_3.html

Although we would be a bit out of date there is merit in sources similarly having zobel networks due to leads with different characteristics, but they don't.

So back to your question, to assist the most complex impedance in a audio system locating amplifiers closer to speakers is beneficial as the speaker lead can be shorter and the amplifier then has better control of the speaker lead. There has been also quite a body of research looking at amplifiers being able to sense the speaker rather than something unknown, with the best example being the Philips Motional feedback design. Malcolm Hawksford and others have published papers about this subject.

Which is not to say assisting the amplifier speaker relationship that you can ignore all the other impedances from sources and particularly pre amp attenuation whether the design is active or passive each has a source and load impedance, its simply that the amplifier / speaker is the most complex and with two mono block you can achieve good result fairly easily.

Cheers / Chris

 I have sneaking suspicion that might be just a little too much information! I had to concentrate quite hard, and I have just added a Zobel to my speakers to compensate for the high capacitance litz speaker cables I am using!
So basically, short leads good, long leads bad. And yes, I know it's not that simple, especially with some Naim amps. :)

Yes Naim leave out the Zobel in some of their amps, and perhaps more guided by capturing the speaker lead market as well, allow the lead to have small similar characteristic with its length, however this starts to encroach on transmission line theory parameters to occur in my opinion, to be then entirely valid.
