View Full Version : Wot Carts Yer Got?

I regard pickup cartridges as the 'jewellery' of Hi-Fi (some interconnects qualify too), they can be lovely things. Most people who are into vinyl have a few and at times I've had over twenty. Many carts look really exquisite, Look at the dearer Koetsus for instance.

Anyway I'm interested in what other members may own (and why maybe).

I'll kick off with mine:

MMs:

JVC Z1S (getting rare now)
ADC 10E Mk.II
ADC 10E Mk.IV (two of)

MCs:

Goldring Eroica LX (underrated by many)
Ortofon MC25FL (two of)
ZYX R50 Bloom H
Zyx R100
ZYX R100 H2

No Deccas at the moment, but they do crop up here now and then.

Yes I know we did something along these lines a little while ago, but where's the harm? :)

Not that many really:

2 Koetsu Blacks (a retipped original and a more recent one)
the 'lump of fudge' in my avatar
an A&R P77.......somewhere or other.

Zyx R-50 Bloom (H);
Zyx R100 (H);
Shure V15III;
Shure M75;
Mk1 ADC XLM;
Sonus Blue Gold;
a few old ATs.

Some of the vintage carts are surprisingly good but my favourite and most entertaining listen at the moment is undoubtedly for me either of the Zyx's although it's the 50 I have in the system at present.

I have a broken "nuded" EMT cartridge (my doing! :steam:). Not only has the suspension collapsed, but I have broken one of the fine wires of the coil. It would need a complete re-wind and rebuild - so rather expensive I suspect.

Aye, I was interested when he posted about his own version of the 103, but not heard any more about it. Hoping he's taking one to Owston..

Marco
26-05-2014, 18:54
Yeah... Did he ever disclose the price? I really need to make that a prerequisite for anyone advertising things in the trade or classifieds sections. Traders simply posting pics of stuff that's ultimately for sale, with no price attached (however nice it may be), is next to pointless.

I certainly don't own them, but I had a good listen to two stone-bodied koetsu cartridges this weekend; one a 'coral' and the other a 'tiger stone'. Both with diamond cantilevers . I don't quite know how you evaluate such devices but they were slightly different in tone, and somewhat impressive (it's hard not be impressed by £11,000 cartridges, if only because of the constant danger of breaking them.: Even the owner, who is not short of a few bob, gets a bit nervous when fitting them.)
Having owned a lot of costly cartridges ( by my lesser standards of 'costly') I still think that the money is better spent on a really first class arm and deck. And a first-rate phono stage. Cartridge last in my ranking, which is odd given their task..... but that's how it seems to pan out to my ears.
Of course, if you can afford 'first rate' everything, problem solved. But who can afford everything? Anyway, having to balance choices is more fun, this hobby shouldn't be too easy.....

I'm sure Linn would agree with you, though they would put the turntable first!

Marco
27-05-2014, 10:06
...and rightly so. It's one of the things that Linn got right! ;)

IMO, the order of T/T hierarchy is thus, if one wishes to achieve the best sonic performance: motor unit ('turntable') > tonearm > cartridge. In essence, therefore, a 'source first' principle works best when building a top-notch turntable.

[This assumes, however, that the cartridge used isn't disproportionately inferior to its partnering ancillaries].
