That's Little 'Ampton, in West Sussex, not that other one, wherever that is.

I have been here before, but not for a while, and have been asked to introduce myself again. So here goes!

I mainly listen to the non-easy listening end of jazz, all in digital format, streamed not on physical discs, and these days am a Class A amp devotee.

I'm not sure what else to say, but I'm also the admin of another place, which I'm not here to promote.

Oh, and I'm Dave.

What Class A are you using?

Welcome to AoS Dave.

Another Class A devotee eh? Care to name names?

Same with the "non-easy listening end of jazz": is this avant guard or free form jazz?

Welcome again , enjoy the Forum

Wow! Lots of welcomes. Thanks everyone.

I hope I won't miss any of your questions by scrolling up and down.

I do have an account - I just logged in with my old details and it let me in. Maybe i just lurked before.

The Class A is a 12 wpc SECA built for me by Colin Wonfor, literally from parts from his loft. It has something in common with the TQ Iridium 20, but doesn't have the sophisticated power supplies.

She's known as the Green Goddess because Colin mistakenly sprayed her dark green rather than the black he meant to use. But that only adds to her charm :-)

On the jazz thing... Jazz changed in the year of my birth - 1959. My only real interests in jazz before that year are Monk, Mingus and Miles. Mmm...

It used to say on my Twitter account, rather tongue in cheek, 'connoisseur of post-Coltrane jazz'. So Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Keith Jarrett, William Parker, David S Ware, Tim Berne etc etc And, of course, Ornette.

Nice to find fellow Class A and Free Jazz fans here (this week Sun Ra would have been 100).

Ah, OK. Apologies, I see what's happened now. You joined last year but never posted. Sorry I read it as you had been here before under a different user name.

No. I'm always known as Uglymusic, unless I'm stopped from using it...

Apologies for not saying anything last time.

Well I don't know the amp Dave, but if it's from Colin it can't be all bad.

I've got a couple of Monarchy Audio power amps in my collection. The SM-70 and the SM-70 Pro, both zero feedback Class A units and they sound lovely. My other amps are Class A valves (apart from a 60 watt Class D still to be assembled). I don't think I could go back to A/B amps now, but there again, good things are said about the Creek Destiny 2 (which I've not heard) and that is A/B.

There is only one Green Goddess in the world, so that's why you don't know about her. I must admit I don't know the Monarchy Audios either.

There is something absolutely magical about a good Class A amp, though. I can't see myself using anything else for my main system, either.

There's also something magical about Class A watts, too. My system is in a 27' through lounge and she drives a pair of Royd RR3s, which are known to need a good beefy amp. The system plays plenty loud enough, which isn't what it says on paper.

Well Dave, speaker and amp combinations are something that just don't always add up to what you see on paper. A few years ago I had a pair of tiny, but very nice sounding Class A, Avreavox (same as Antique Sounds) 8 watt monoblocks (kindly supplied by Hayden Boardman) and they drove my 83db Celestion SL600 Si speakers perfectly well.

That's actually very similar - on paper ;-) - to the Green Goddess and RR3 combo.

I want to try the Green Goddess on the end of a pair of large horns that belong to a mate of mine. That should be fun!

Jazz, eh!
Well, no-one's perfect, I guess. ;)

Welcome to an active role in AOS, Dave. Nice to see you here. :)

Dang shame you're not nearer to me - I'd love to hear the Green Goddess! I've yet to hear a tranny class A amp that I liked, but I'm always keen to be proved wrong - it's the best way to learn!

You should come over and hear her in a more favourable system. She wasn't quite at home with the Tannoys.

Sorry about the Jazz, Jerry. I couldn't live up to your impeccable taste, so I kept clear of the Classical repertoire entirely :-)

Have you heard any of Colin's Class As? The bugger brought over the TQ Iridium 20 (like the one Stu has) for an afternoon after I'd told him I'd never heard a Class A I'd liked, and things just shifted! The nasty man wouldn't leave it behind, though.

It could be that we come at things from different ends, so to speak, so you'd not like them.

You're welcome to visit if you find yourself in the area. We're just down the road from Chichester and Arundel (I've been telling people that estate agents are referring to Littlehampton as Lower Arundel :-) ), which are both well worth a visit.

Well, no-one's perfect. Apart from me, of course.

Nope.

Stu reported similar things - and then shelled out the £Big £Moolah

Which is why I'd kind of like to hear one.
Only kind of ... as I am very happy with the Chameleon amp which set me back £100. Do I really want to be lusting after something that would cost me 50x as much?
Hmm :hmm: nah, I'm glad you're too far away!

If you're happy with a £100 amp, stick with it and spend more on music - seriously!

One of the reviews of the Iridium said that its presentation of music was unique. Possibly. Colin's Class As certainly have something. I love it. Others may not.

The offer for a listen stands, Jerry. But like Mr W, I won't let you have the Green Goddess, even if you want her :-D
