Have your musical tastes changed?

I was pondering whether my musical preferences have changed over the years and am interested to hear some views from other forum members.

On the whole, personally I've been fairly consistent in the type of music I listen to, although it is fairly 'eclectic' - rock, classical and electronic. None of the albums I own which I used to enjoy have been consigned to the charity shops, they all get a spin now and again. Even the stuff I bought as a young teenager still gets played.

Are there some artists you used to enjoy but have gone off, is good music always good music?

I do think that getting a good sound from my system (despite the nay-sayers, the LP12 can be sublime) has helped me enjoy a wider range of music, I'm not so sure I would feel the same way if I didn't enjoy the way the music is reproduced.

In my case, yes, but that's from a base figure of zero as far as classical is concerned. I know most of the music I liked when younger so well I rarely play it; there's so much good stuff out there it seems a shame to listen to, say, 'Exile On Main Street' for the nth time rather than something different.

I think I was lucky in that I played in a youth orchestra when I was young and learned to appreciate classical music alongside pop and rock. On the other hand Springsteen did feature very heavily in my listening (and still does).

Album Club is great for trying out new stuff, kudos to those that put forward challenging recordings :)

My collection has always been a fairly reasonable 50:50 split between classical and modern genres (even these semantics are flawed since John Taverner was modern but wrote in the classical genre). I think my tastes have become more eclectic over the years as I sample more musical types and some of them stick. It's fun discovering new music to research into and sample.

if anything I listen to less classical than I did when I was younger.

I wouldn't say my music taste has changed, because I still like the stuff I used to listen to, and play it occasionally, classic rock, prog, indie, classical etc

it has evolved however, and these days I listen to genres that I was relatively unaware of back then, like extreme metal and folk.

More john peel type stuff,although i do like a couple of slade tracks.
Lots of reggae and mainstream indie.
I've tried to like classical but it never really works for me.Hear the ocassional track i realy like.
Have a hundred or so albums and box sets i need to sell as i just can't get into it.
I feel i should be more of a radio 3 listener but radio 6 ticks the boxes for me.

I like to try new stuff - both new to me (obscure or lesser known composers) and more modern things still under the heading of classical.

My folks didn't really listen much to music at all - but for some reason they entered a competition (before I was born, I think) and won a whole batch of classical LPs. They barely ever played them, but I discovered them at the back of a cupboard when I was 6 or 7 or so .... for some reason the music just appealed to me, and it's not lost its hold since then at all.

I don't think my tastes have changed since my late twenties. I started out listening to the Beatles, then Cream and the like. I had played classical music on the piano but for some reason forgot all about it when it came to records.

Then I got into guitars, both making and playing. Flamenco and classical. Added jazz and blues along the way. My love of baroque music came out of the love of jazz and I still prefer the performances that stress the syncopation.

I do find that, whilst I still have the same likes, I do tend to listen to more baroque and jazz than anything else these days.

Hmm i would say not changed although as of late i have been buying LOTS of Jazz , Jazz fusion , Acid Jazz ETC. Though i'm broadening my horizons to classical started a collection of LP's & CD's. I was always brought up of Rock , Heavy Metal , Blues , Indie ETC. Got to collect something even ABBA.:lol:

My tastes have changed/evolved MASSIVELY, since I first started listening to music 'seriously' in the late 70s (when I was in my early teens).

In those days, apart from a bit of Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, etc, I mostly listened to 'Top 40' chart music and disco (back then I was a 'trendy boy') - and that state of affairs remained until around 1990, after having gone through the whole '80s thing' (which was very much my era) - and so the early 90s was when my music tastes started to diversify, as I discovered new stuff.

When I was a teenager in the late 70s/early to mid 80s, I wouldn't have dreamed of listening to the likes of jazz or classical music, which I now love, or some of the indie bands I'm into these days, not to mention a whole load of obscure and wonderful music (even prog rock) I enjoy listening to now on a regular basis.

Also, seemingly unlike a lot of folk here, aside from the 80s new wave/electro pop I largely grew up with, which I still occasionally indulge in and enjoy, I almost never play the same music I did 'back in the day'. My tastes are *so* much different now - thank f*ck for that! :D

I had a similar experience (as well as parents who didn't listen to music) with a set of Dylan LPs that were left behind in lieu of rent by a bunch of students who rented my uncle's bungalow one summer. Every Dylan LP from his first self-titled effort through to Highway 61 Revisited, all in glorious mono. I played them over and over again, learned the lyrics off by heart, and went out and bought John Wesley Harding when I'd saved up enough money (my sister having already bought Blonde on Blonde).

Sadly classical music was associated with school and 'musical appreciation' and thus fundamentally un-cool. I liked (and still do like) Haydn, but most of it went in one ear and out the other.

Nowadays, I probably listen to 75% classical, with some jazz, early blues and the odd 'blast from the past' session when I dig out my old LPs to see if they've stood the musical test of time.

The major change in my tastes occurred when I came to the conclusion that the distinction I'd been operating with between 'good' and 'bad' music was not in good standing.
Before then, some pretty ad hoc criteria for 'good' music had been exerting an influence on my listening, encouraging me to pass over lots of stuff that I would later come to enjoy. Since then, I've consistently tried to expose myself to as much new (to me) and varied music as possible, and I find that I'm able to enjoy most things.
