If you were to pick your five favourite Duke Ellington recordings, what would they be?
I'm just starting out late with the Duke and so far have:
Live at Newport 1956
The Duke Meets Coleman Hawkins
Indigos
The Nutcracker Suit
The Polupar
The Great Re-Union (Louis Armstrong meets the Duke)
It's still great stuff now, almost 70 years after the Duke hit the big time but it's his late '30's to mid 40's band music which really seems to swing. I'm guessing that might have been the "heyday" band?
