Just ordered this as its only just become available where I live. 38mb as opposed to 11mb that we get at the moment. They don't change the cable coming in to the house so I wonder if the speed is limited a bit? Anyway installation on 9th June!:)

If you read the technical blurb you'll see that it's fibre to your nearest roadside cab.
From there it's over twisted pair telephone cable.
So there's still a limitation, dependent upon how far you are from the roadside cab that feeds your connection.

The roadside cabs are generally closer to your premises than the local main exchange is.

Yep, thats why its referred to as FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) The other option is FTTP where it remains optical to the house. FTTC is potentially limited by the copper part, but normally the upper limit is set by your service plan unless you are far from the cabinet. Fibre to the house is effectively a leased line, so the speed you get is controlled by what you are prepared to pay.

If you live in my part of London, the service level is FITCBA - F*cked If They Can Be Arsed - BT have no plans to roll it out in parts of Central London. And, if like me, you have a pathological dislike of the bearded one, that leaves you with no fibre. Welcome to the 21st century.

AFAIK Virgin Media is still very much part of the Virgin Group Company. Singapore Airlines is owned by Temasek Holdings and the Singapore Government....RB sold 49% of Virgin Atlantic to Singapore Airlines but still owns 51% ;)

FWIW we got FTTC (about 150m away as the crow flies) some years ago. In that time I have swapped between BT and Murdoch's lot for 'unlimited' service as they pretended to compete with each other, and my D/L speed has remained around 37 to38MB/s with an upload speed usually over 8MB/s, irrespective of the 'provider'. I do check it occasionally and in the early days it did have a couple of causes to get them to take another look at the service as it tended to get slower and slower (a point to keep an eye on IMO) but it has been consistent now for the last few years.

Not sure how it is in the suburbs of Ormskirk; if you have a 2 pair wire and if the equipment in cabinet can do vectoring... you could get a 100/30 depending on distance and quality of the wires.

On another note; they (TDC) dug 3 pipes down under my sidewalk 9 years ago... can I get a fiber as private Citizen? no.. well I can get a business connection

Down here in Cornwall if you are off the beaten track then smoke signals are generally faster than broadband :lol:
