So what is the opinion on the English team selection? Is youth over experience the right way to go? If I am not mistaken we have already tried that a few times without any luck. It is a tough and long campaign in climate conditions I know very well.

I don't think there is much to lose by gambling on a young squad, it will be quite an achievement if England get through the group stage, what the hell give the youngsters a crack I say.

Brazil are overwhelming favourites with Argentina and Uruguay close behind, I will be very surprised if a European team win it but Germany should be strong contenders, Italy too.

Looking forward to it and hoping for some great games, maybe a few shocks?

Old or new makes no odds,so give the new a chance.
Until we teach kids how to pass the ball the world cup is a million miles away for England.

Very true , It will be interesting to see how Spain fare this time ,they should be contenders but I have a feeling the great run is coming to an end ?

Yes,expect them to be in last 4 but there team is getting on now.
They will bounce back soon though imo.

Sadly if things don't change in our coaching skills the same conversations will be happening on www in 50 years time.

Belgium could be worth watching out for.

Underachievers Belgium ,they do play some good stuff .

At least Roy is prepared to take a gamble with the youngster's , I didn't think he would ? Most England managers in the past always pick the same safe old bunch of has been's and experienced (so called) players , it could all go horrible wrong and he'll get crucified by the media , but its a breath of fresh air , if he can somehow get them to click as a team ? Easier said than done .

England's chance of winning the world cup?...............They'll be back home before the postcards.
Has some opportunist second-rate singer released an England song yet? No chance of winning the world cup without an England song to lift the team.:D

As usual we have the hardcore deluded England fans who actually think England have a chance, the reality is Accrington Stanley have more chance of lifting the cup.
The European teams to watch are Germany/Spain/Italy. Expect some good football from some of the African nations too.

I hope Roy is going to play videos of the Germany games in the last World Cup.
Simple attacking football and a resolute team mentality is the way to go in my opinion.
Patience will also be key - trying too hard to force a goal is not something to get engaged in - they'll get hit on the counter and will be overstretched and overwhelmed.

The other thing the England players must do is ignore all the worthless twats in the media.

Yes Chris spot on , England can't compete with Uruguay or Italy in the flare stakes , they a need some sort of gameplan and stick to it ,all out attack and six in the box against Germany as I remember it ? Could easily have been 6-1 .

There has always been a group of fans (certainly after the '66 win) who kid themselves that England will succeed at every tournament. The more realistic fans just hope they can give a reasonable performance.

I fancy Colombia to have a very strong run; lots of talent and experience and some serious firepower up front. Guarin, Cuadrado and Rodriguez have been on top form this season. Add Bacca and Falcao up front and they're very serious contenders.
England? Hmm. Don't see them going past the group stage.

hi

I don't think that he had much of an option and the squad picked itself really. IMHO it's good to see the youth coming through and given a chance, rather than decades of taking "celebrity" players and all the ego and baggage that comes with them, in previous years this approach has not worked and we've failed ever since 1990 (where we all know we got to the Semi-Final), since then it's been the same old selection policy.

I honestly think we won't get out of our group as with youth comes inexperience when tired (brain wise) and this not only a very hot and humid country but International football is very technical indeed. I hope I am proved wrong though.

Beers at 10pm should prove good for work the next day though :)

Got my bets on. Uruguay to win 28/1, Suarez to be top scorer 14/1.

England will struggle to get out of the group but it makes sense to field a younger side given the climate. Hodgson is the biggest liability I think, he is one of those managers who is reluctant to make changes when things are not working. He never seems to have a plan B. Hopefully he will prove me wrong.

Anyone see the story about Samir Nasri's girlfriend who got a bit upset her man was left out of the French national squad? She layed into Didier Deschamps on Twitter and now he's taking her to court for 'public insult'!!!

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/samir-nasri-girlfriend-anara-atanes-in-hot-water-with-france-over-twitter-rant-9387359.html

Absolutely stupid behaviour by her, but Deschamps's response is equally pathetic IMO - he needs to man up a bit... And what kind of country is France becoming where you can sue someone for swearing at you??

Stratmangler

Deschamps response is very girlie.
He does need to man up.

It is strange though that he should leave Nasri out of his squad - Nasri has played exceptionally well this season.

The crying shame is that Gareth Bale, who for me, right now, is the best player in the world, won't be gracing our screens...

As usual, I shall be supporting Italy, although I can't see us doing too well this time - quarter finals, tops. For me, it's Brazil's trophy!

Yup, or some other South American team, such as Uruguay, as the heat will be incredible... I guess it depends on how well Brazil handle the pressure as hosts and favorites - that's always a big factor, as the expectation levels will be immense.

As for Bale and Ramsey, yeah maybe one day Wales will be able to field a full team with players of that talent, and then become a force to be reckoned with! In my dreams, anyway... ;)

No sooner have I put my bets on Uruaguay than Suarez gets injured in training and will almost certainly need a knee op and will be out of the World Cup, or at least the group stage. Bloody typical. Would anyone like me to knobble some other team's chances? Just let me know who and I will go and put a bet on them now for you, thus immediately reducing their chances to nil....

Didn't know you had a soft spot for Wales Marco ,mucho respect for that , being of anglo welsh decent myself ,I always want Wales and England to do well , my dream is to see Wales make it to either the Euro's or especially the World Cup , maybe one day ?

I think Italy will do ok ,they had a poor World cup in SA , I'm sure they will get to the QF at least this time , sadly I can't see England getting past them or Uruguay , you never know though , desperately need a player like Bale or Ramsey , Wilshere just isn't there yet .

30 May 1984 - Liverpool v Roma European Cup Final. My birthday, had booked a romantic dinner at an Italian restaurant. Went to penalties. Restaurant came to a halt, a TV came out from the kitchen, all the staff were cheering for Roma, guests for Liverpool. We won and dessert and drinks were on the house.

14 June 2014, OMG where did the 30 years go? Will be at the Gran Melia, Rome. Very bad planning. Can anyone lend me an Italia T-shirt?

I am going to continue with plan A as far as watching matches go - watch the ones with City players (ok, I missed last night's game - I didn't get in until late and I was knackered), and check out the usual suspects (ie Germany).
Brazil won the other night, but there were more than a couple of dodgy decisions, and I'm still not sure why the Croatian equaliser was disallowed

I'm very much behind this disappearing painted line thing - it's a fantastic way of keeping a wall in position :)
It should be used in the Premier League from the start of the next season.

Ha, if I did that for Villa I'd only be watching Holland (Ron Vlaar) USA (Brad Guzan) and Switzerland (Phillippe Senderos), very disappointing from a a formerly proud club that used to be packed with internationals.

I'm still shocked at the lack of call ups for Negredo, Nasri and Navas!

So am I!
Well not quite....
Navas can cause real chaos coming in from that right wing, but his final ball is frequently none too accurate if he's crossing it into the area.
Negredo hasn't played at his best since the West Ham game (League Cup Semi 2nd Leg) when he injured his shoulder, although he was starting to look good again at the end of the season.
Nasri has had a phenomenal season - he must have upset Deschamps big style. Nasri's girlfriend has also upset Deschamps - the wuss should just get over it ;)

Hard luck, lads. I thought that England played pretty well, but tired badly in the second half, thus allowing Italy to dictate play. Pirlo was once again immense - what about that free kick?

Yeah, a very good performance from England, on the whole, Italy were looking very tired in the 2nd half, content to defend the 2-1 lead and hit England on the break, Rooney will be kicking himself, missing that chance.

He really should be playing his normal role though ?

Pirlo was marvellous again, what a fine player he is, makes the game look so easy, just love the aloof way he plays, like he's not even trying.

Not sure you can contain him really? Hack his legs anytime he gets the ball, Uruguay and Costa Rica might try that.

Lol... I seem to remember that there were a couple of World Cups Scotland were at, which you lot missed, namely in 1974 and 1978, not forgetting your failure also to qualify in 1994 (supposedly as one of the 'big teams')! :eyebrows:

However, considering the difference in size of population between both countries, it's foolish to even attempt to compare their respective football teams against each other, in terms of success.... In that respect, Scotland will always be minnows.

I believe that Scotland last qualified for the World Cup in 1990. Gordon Strachan is doing wonders with them at the moment, though, and I reckon things are on the up and, given a favourable draw, we could well qualify this time for the Euro finals.

Remember it well, Scotland needed to win by three clear goals and came so close.
It was a edge of seat entertaining game and i was certainly not alone willing the Scots on, sadly it was not to be.

Back to this world cup. What a great game between the USA and Ghana, the yanks had to soak it up in the second half and they looked knackered, but what a well timed substitution.

Indeed not. Watching Spain play last night (even when their existence in the tournament depended on them winning) was like watching paint dry!

There was a distinct lack of tempo and very little sense of verve or urgency, pace or penetration - total dullsville!! <YAWN>

Holland, in terms of how they play football, are unquestionably my favourite team in the tournament. Their style of football is *exactly* how I like the game to be played, and with Van Gaal at the helm next season for Utd, it augurs well for them being successful, if he can get them playing in a similar way.

His first signing, in that respect, should be Arjen Robben, to partner RVP!!

Rather unexpectedly, it's been the top European teams that have impressed me much more than any of the South American ones. In that respect, Holland, Germany, France and Italy have all been fantastic, less so Brazil or Argentina, although I fully expect one of the latter to be in the final.

Yes indeed ,though I wouldn't mind seeing a Brazil v Argentina or perhaps Netherlands v Germany ? Mainly because the rivalry makes it interesting though potentially explosive ,remember the voller Rijkaard incident at Italia 90 .

A couple of interesting or useless facts (depending on your point of view) Italy since 1970 have reached the final every 12 years ,1970 ,1982,1994 and 2006 , some kind of sequence going there Marco , so they should reach the final again in 2018 and win it again in 2030 ?

England have never beaten Uruguay in the world cup losing 4-2 in 1954 and 0-0 in 66 .

A Robben RVP partnership would be a marriage made in heaven, but sadly it's not going to happen (I'd be delighted to be proved wrong on this)
This is what Robben said last month....

"Manchester United? That's not an option. I am staying at Bayern Munich. Period.

And I cannot imagine that Bayern would want to sell me.

"I have only just renewed my contract and we are happy with each other. It would have been a different story had I been unhappy.

"I would have been open to a move then, because I had a great time under Van Gaal at Bayern. He has been very important for my career.

"However, the fact is that I am very happy at my current club."

Of course money talks in football, but why would BM want to sell a prize asset? They don't need the cash.

2-0 or 2-1 for Uruguay tonight.

If Italy can win their two remaining games and England manage to beat Costa Rica then we might just about manage to scrape through.

Jeezuz... Much as I admire the footballing skills of Suarez, he is clearly a seriously damaged human being, and should be on the plane home along with the Italy and England team - if not in jail!! 'Animal' doesn't cut it...

As far as actual football matters go, Italy were utter, utter MOLTO PISHANTO EL SHITE-O (which is 'pishanto' to the max), and as far as I'm concerned, fully deserve to be eliminated from the tournament. First game against England aside, which must've been a fluke, the yawn-inducing BORRRRRIIINNNG defensive tactics of Prandelli, together with the team's total lack of tempo, were a disgrace, and utterly alien to the concept of playing entertaining football.

In my opinion, although England didn't actually win a match, overall they played far better than Italy did, and at least tried to entertain their fans. England should stick with Hodgson, as they have the makings of a good (young) team - and one that could do well in the Euros.

As for Italy, arrivederci Prandelli (sei un vero scemo è grande biscaro) For Gawd's sake, let's hope the next manager appointed can inject some verve and passion into the team's play!!

There is always that feeling of expectation wirh England, somewhat over optimistic, but the Italian public quite rightly expect the Azzuri to get close or win the world cup, being recent champions that's fair enough I guess, just took a look at republica website and the utter despair on fans faces, well we know how it feels.

Marco, I can't understand what happened to Italy ?

No idea, mate. Prandelli said that he tried a 'technical system' that didn't work - and, by fook, it didn't!!

As good as Pirlo was (and he was/is a special player), I suspect that when he retires, the team will be forced to change its style somewhat, as they'll no longer be able to place way too much reliance on him to control a game.

The other problem is that they have no truly great strikers, as indeed they once had....

Think the USA may beat belgium tonight, have been impressed with them.

I agree there is no obvious winner I can see at the moment ,its there for the taking , Brazil look beatable , Colombia could take them , Germany not entirely convincing but Muller is so threatening , they are taking huge risks at the back ? The game with les bleus could be a cracker !

Best I've seen Belgium play so far, but what a heroic performance from the USA, incredible last half hour extra time.

Am I the only one who finds Chiles n co's negativity with regards to how Brazil played tonight a pain. For me it was a great fast paced game and Brazil played well, doing what was required and with a sense of passion. Super goal from Luiz too. Now I know Brazil havnt looked 'amazing' up to this point but to just go on and on about them not playin great etc after this game is just rubbish imo, annoying and missin the point :steam:.

Brazil played with passion all right, lots of that, you can sense the weight of expectation, but there was a real feeling of panic after going 2-0 up, I think I can understand that, but really opened themselves up to Colombia, who could have sent the game in to extra time.

With Neymar out, sadly I can't see how they can win it now, Germany should beat them.

Hi Chris, Yeah, I agree on all counts. It's as if as the host nation and being Brazil their country expects them to win it. Truth is they have some good players but they are not a 'special' Brazil side ie: one you can see actually winning the World Cup this time round. At least we can see they've give it some and you can never ask more of a team than that at the end of the day.

I think the criticism of Brazil is fair game myself Rob! We just expect so much more from them given their history - definitely the poorest Brazil team in living memory for me. The best that can be said for some of them is that they are 'triers' and have an excellent team spirit but not much more - I feel sorry for poor old Neymar having to play with some of those guys. 'Fred' and 'Hulk' have comedy names and performances to match - Fred in particular has been beyond woeful in every game. One shot last night and 34 'touches' … I can't believe that there isn't better available in Brazil but then with the likes of Jo on the bench, er, maybe not …

Outside of Neymar they are seriously lacking in flair compared to what we're used to apart from the occasional moment of inspiration - David Luiz amazing technique last night for the free kick. Wasn't a game for the purist with some brutal tackling (31 fouls against Brazil) but guess that is to be expected for a local derby at this stage of the competition. Brazil had obviously decided to stop James playing at all costs and the ref certainly helped them in this regard - how Fernandinho's challenges against him weren't carded early on I don't know. Personally, I really hope they don't win it as that won't be a very good advert for World football.

Hi Jules, Hope you're good. Again, I agree. I wouldnt want them to win it simply because they are definitely not the best team in the competition. At the same time if we'd have got this far playing like they have I think we'd all be saying we turned up last night and are showing plenty of heart and promise.

Hey Rob, yeah pretty good thanks mate, hope the family are all well?

Yes, I take your point. Just another thought - everyone bangs on about the Premier League being so physical and hard, but as far as I can see, all of the South American teams play a tougher brand of football which we can't match at the moment. Some of those teams combine that with a lot of skill and flair which is a potent combination. The talented youngsters in the England set-up won't be winning anything until they can get to grips with these kind of teams physically in my opinion ...

What's also interesting to me is that England have tried to adopt what the European teams used to do on the whole - ie very patient passing game building up from the back ... A lot of these teams and also the South American teams are now playing with a much higher tempo and more directly ... I don't think we can live with this at the moment. Of course we don't want a return to the old style of full-backs launching it long down the wing for someone to run onto, but we need to be able to play our passing game, which England can do well at, but at a tempo that can hurt the opposition. It wouldn't hurt if we had a central midfield that could control a game and a less error-prone defence ... That's it, World Cup rant over!

Lol! No rant Jules, Totally agree with the points you've made. That balance they've adopted of physical coupled with tempo and of course skill is very effective and hard to deal with. The physical bit though can be a bit much as we saw last night. The knee into the back of Neymar made me wince big time. You could see he was in serious pain and we now know the damage done to him and Brazil in the campaign of course.

Smart substitution by Van Gaal last night, he has the midas touch, I have a feeling it could be a good season ahead for Man utd.

What about Costa Rica, hardest team to beat at this world cup, who'd have thought ? Great goalkeeper.

After being eliminated from the World Cup, the Nigerian captain has personally offered to refund all the expenses of fans who had travelled to Brazil.

He said he just needed their bank details and PIN numbers to complete the transaction.

Thought's on tonight's final, might be a tight cagey affair ? Possibly decided by 1 goal or extra time and penalties though I hope not.

I don't much care for football these days, but I saw Vasco v Flamengo in the Maracanã stadium in 1979 - in those days it held around 200,000 people and I have never quite witnessed a spectacle like it, unbelievable and the atmosphere after outside was just mental, totally mental and it was just a regular game. Those guys really love their football! Such a shame Brazil didn't at least get to the final though and I was sorry to hear they lost, that would have been some mighty party had they won.

And don't you just love YouTube . . . I don't know if this is the game I went to, but gives a flavour . . . check out those shorts

How Messi got player of the tournament is beyond me.... He was disappointing.

Not even in the top 3 in his team.... I would put Mascherano, Zabaleta and Lavezzi over him.

I reckon player of the tournament should have gone to either Mascherano, Robben, Schweinsteiger, or Ochoa
