does the foam above the tweeter on a JR149 actually do anything?

If not I just want to strip it off.

I was told it helped damp the metal cover although I couldn't hear any vibration when the foam fell off mine.

It's likely there to address a diffraction issue at the top 'lid' lip. You could replace it with something less ugly though.

I thought it could be a diffraction thing, just not sure thats all. Well I've whipped it off now so I will have a listen and see if it makes a difference. :)

How are the grills held in place?

Any diffraction effects may be difficult to pin down just by listening. They will almost certainly vary audibly according to the listener's position in relation to the vertical dispersion pattern of the tweeter.

I dont think my lug 'oles will be able to tell much difference so I think its a case of listening and seeing what happens. I can always fit the foam with a bit of velcro which is a lot nicer than the crappy glue they used originally.

Andy I have no idea what the foam does but my LS 3/5a, using the same T27 tweeter, has foam surrounding it

I restored a pair of JR149s for a record dealer about 15 years ago, without the foam the imaging suffers very slightly so it is a diffraction thing. The original glue was as you say crappy, so I used double sided tape.

The mesh grill on the front is stapled on. the main foam grill wraps all around & held in place at the back by round velcro pads..

Thanks, but I think on your LS 3/5a's it works as a method of damping the speaker, if you look at my post you'll see a black material around the tweeter, this is how they did it on the JR149. I could of course be completely wrong but I think that's what it does. :lol:

Paul, thanks. Looks like I'll into getting some more foam as some point.

Andre. I'm still thinking about if I actually want foam on the spekers, I'm more worried about restoring the veneer. This is virgin ground for me.

Thanks Andre. I did wonder. Any idea if the original velcro-type strip can still be had? What's on mine is quite a thin strip. Only on one speaker though with nothing on the other.

Perhaps a square of felt with a hole in the centre might be an alternative to the foam.
