View Full Version : Nice alternative to the stock lid.
Was just looking online for a second-hand lid for a friend's freshly acquired 1210, and I noticed this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dust-Cover-for-Technics-SL-1210-or-1200-Lid-Case-Protector-fits-MK2-3D-5-5G-/201084413208
They look smashing I think - I'll be getting one for myself; the old perspex lid is certainly past it's best.
Thought this might be of interest to folks here :)

agreed looks very nice indeed, thanks for the heads up
Regards Neil
Looks nice - but it has no connection to the hinges as far as I can see...

Best not to have an attached cover. It picks up air vibration from speakers and feeds it back into the turntable affecting the sound quality. A lift off lid is better.

That's right I think as far as the pictures go, but notably all of the pictures are of a MK5, which didn't have a hinged lid in the first place. That said, I'm guessing it's not intended to be hinged, since it appears to be geared towards the DJ market, and one of the first things one did as a newbie DJ with a pair of MK2s was to unhinge the lids (presumably why later models lacked the hinges).
That is nice could be improved upon easily. It appears to be made from 5 pieces of acrylic, but it would look better and easier to make if it was made from 3 pieces. I had a custom cover made for a former turntable and the front, top, and back were a single piece with the two sides glued on. I can't recall what I paid, but it was in the order of £30.

Be interested to know more if you can furlkle around in the memory banks or similar
Hi Tom,
Nice lid - thanks for sharing that. Think I might get one, as the original lid for my Techy is a little scratched. However....
That's right I think as far as the pictures go, but notably all of the pictures are of a MK5, which didn't have a hinged lid in the first place.
The T/T in the picture doesn't look like a MK5, unless the MK5 was different from the MK5G, which is what I've got and came fitted with a hinged lid. The MK5G also has a nice shiny, black speckled-finish top-plate, and the pitch-control defeat buttons are different, along with the fact that it has blue lights, as opposed to the usual green.
Anyway, the new lid is nicely designed (better looking than the original) and will certainly keep dust off of my T/T when it's not being used :)
Marco.

Yup, they were indeed different - they were released at the same time (2003, I think), with the MK5G priced around £50 more than the MK5. In contrast to the MK5, the G has a digital pitch adjust with the option to go up to +/-16, and improved tonearm wiring/cable (plus the shiny finish you mention). The MK5 has the same finish as the MK2, but with a slightly improved tonearm design and the addition of the 'pitch zero' button, replacing the 'click' in the pitch adjust (better for mixing).
Pleased you like the look of the lid :)

I was about to hit the buy it now button , Then thought why not take the hinges off the original one I have and use that
The one listed on ebay would be great if you did not have or had a damaged lid
Nice find

I've cheerfully used this aftermarket cover:
http://www.decksaver.co.uk/covers/turntable-covers/sl-1200-cover
It can be purchased at 50% of the MRP from several UK resellers.

Not sure if I like the art of that or not...........

Yes Mike, it is a different approach compared with the orthodox cover. It does look better in the flesh than on the website, but it's not to all tastes.

I ordered an Iconic Audios dust cover 24. April. and the estimated delivery time is 12. June - 3. July. It´s a quite long time but apparently the manufacturer makes a lot when there´s enough orders.
The lid looks nice an study and the price is very reasonable as long as the finishing quality is adequate. Hopefully worth the wait.
In my opinion the lid should be removed when playing or if left in place closed at least. A hinged lid opened is not good for the sound if the turntable is in the same room with speakers.

Very nice looking lid- mine is pristine - and packed away in the original box - this makes me almost want one

Which reminds me.. I could really do with a special, somehow giving me extra room around the arm area which I occasionally touch when putting the not-that-great-condition lid back. Or perhaps I need to find a better way !

If someone buys one can they let me know how good the bonded joint are as with getting a top notch Granite machinist i find the same issues with lid construction

It is.
"Space", Ibiza.
One of the true global dance venues.
And, lurching back towards the topic, they use a lot of Decksaver covers.

Well, yes, but I doubt a Decksaver will be of the mass and durability of the 'iconic-audio' item of the OP.
Part of the Decksaver's appeal to the club/DJ user is its low profile and mass compared to the original lid and also because it remains in place by an interference fit with the chassis. That is, it doesn't require hinges to stay in situ when your moving the decks around your venue or indeed moving decks between venues.
For domesticated 1200/1210s that enjoy pampered lives, the heavy weight, tall, rigid acrylic cover appears to be ideal.
For working spinners that spend their lives nightclubbing, and for which the original hinged lid is a hindrance, the polycarbonate Decksaver would be more suitable.

Thanks. I'm in no rush. Will postpone that decision for a while

I must give credit to the before mentioned lid from Iconic-Audio.
The lid is really clear, no flaws and looks stunning IMHO. I added my own silicone feet to make room for the tonearmcable and the antiskate hanger.
I´m more than happy I chose this.

Ordered!!
My old one was scratched, and I really didn't want to put the hinges back on.
Any excuse I guess!
