Brain Salad Surgery box set querie

Has anyone bought the new E.L.P Brain Salad Surgery box set yet? I am seriously considering it but i am a little concerned that i may be repeating what i already have with the exception of the SACD's. I already have a DVD with a lot of footage on it so i am wondering if there is something new on the DVD included in the set. I would appreciate any info anyone may have :)

Mmmm, all very interesting is this. My problem is that whilst i really want to order this beautifully presentaed box set there are only a few things in it that really excite me, one of them being the LP. Is the LP a heavy pressing? My copy is the copy i actually bought in 1973 and despite what the band themselves think it's a shocking mix and production. It is thin and weedy. I already have the deluxe box set of CD's which i thought were ok. The only other thing that i would enjoy is the DVD doumentary and film footage. What concerns me about that is that i may already have most of it on my "Beyond The Beginning DVD". This would leave thenSACD and/or DVD audio 5.1 discs unused as i have at present no surround sound sytem, although i do have an SACD player. Oh'what to do? :confused:

Ive avtually cancelled the set with the LP. instead i ordered the CD/DVD jobbie..

Steve are you sure you have a 1st issue because my 1st issue is not thin & weedy.

Yes it definately is. I have three copies and that's the production. It's shite! I have a few albums like that. Alan Parson "Eve" being another one. I was pinning my hopes on the new ELP vinyl. At the oposite end of the scale i bought the heavy vinyl copies of Fragile and the Yes album and actually prefered my original copies.

It might be shit or bust i think and just buy the box set. sixty two squid's a lot of dosh though innit?

PS, Have you heard the Steven Wilson ELP albums yet?

'Brain Salad' is not Eddy Offord ELP job is it ;) .. I also have a very early Japanese pressing of 'BSS' is no different sounding to my UK 1st issue imho.. I only have the Debut & Tarkus Wilson jobbies on CD only..

Just had another read of this thread. I have a less than perfect 1st edition of BSS and it sounds very bombastic on my system. I would never describe it as sounding "thin" quite the opposite, but that could be my system. My deluxe copy of BSS arrived today and I'm listening to it now. Currently the new stereo mix is blasting out through my ATC's, it sounds great. The vinyl is going to get a play this evening. I'll update if I get time.

I'm interested in your opinions, Rexton. I have an early vinyl copy and a Japanese mini LP replica CD. Thinking about getting the new reissue. I always thought the sound quality wasn't bad but always had a problem with Greg's voice on Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression. Probably my favourite track too.

I remember reading at the time that the band were using and liking a particular tinny sounding microphone. I had several LP exchanges at the time it came out but the vinyl was noisy and awful then. The first CD issue (done by Barry Diament) took all the tinny sound away (wrongly IMO) but the late 90's remastering (Victory records) was superb and brought the sound back to better than LP in my view.

Looking back, some productions seem rather odd to modern-day thinking. Just enjoy this music as it comes out :) :respect:

This would concur with my view of the sound being weedy and thin. Tinny is perhaps a much better description than mine. I am hanging on to see if the 180g vinyl LP gets released without having to buy the box set to get it. If i bought the box set the DVD audio discs would simply be a waste as i don't have a DVD audio player. I would like to know what is going to be included on the DVD video too.

Hi Andy,

Greg's voice seemed less rich and full in sound to my ears.

The Japanese cd I have is on the Victor label, it doesn't mention anything about who mastered it but it's a beautiful package. My vinyl LP is a bit battered from years of playing in the seventies as a boy, on a Fidelity UA8 stereo. Good times though. Love to be able to time travel back. It's certainly a wonderful album. I have the NME 7" flexidisc too somewhere.

It may come out on it's own as it is sold in the USA alone... Hey I had to pay £80 for the 'Warrior on the Edge Of Time' set for the sake of the LP, i did not want to & believe me i was sick as a pig at the time, especially now i don't want it anymore..

What im eager to know is Regarding The 'Excepts from BSS' on CD-2, have they used the crackly flexi-disc as a source or have they found the original master mix?
