i recently fitted a Goldring 1042 to my Ittok on the old LP12 to replace the previous tenent (Ortofon VMS20E), and i have realised just how much information i have been missing . although the ortofon played music and was very good (it was a freebie) for what it was, it was only when the Goldring was fitted , that i realised just how good the 1042 is , and that it is worth all the recommendations it has been given over the many years since it's introduction . thanks to Richard and Simon

I've the Roksan version of the cart, a Reson Reca, which is fantastic, certainly the best cart I've ever heard in my system.

I have just bought a Firebottle valve phono amp and the seller optimised the amp for the cart, couldn't be happier.

I seem to remember that in the old days of "source first" and "GIGO" the cartridge wasn't really considered to be the source ie LP12/ITTOK/ inexpensive cartridge/budget amp/minimax speakers was acceptable.

Well, if you're going for it Andr'e. Try an old Ortofon M15E in a Lustre arm, or a Decca 4RC in a Linn LVX. ;)

Buy a ZYX R50 and just forget about choosing cartridges. (you'd need a good SUT though)

Well this takes me back ! Cartridge matching - Effective Compliance Versus Arm Mass results in a Resonant Frequency  ( of the cantilever ) the idea being generally that you don't match high mass arms with high compliance cartridges or low mass arms with low compliance cartridges. But as with all things there are exceptions to every rule ! Like the miss held belief of many in the vinyl hey day that only LP12's worked in all Linn or all Naim systems ! Now that's bull shit if ever I heard any ! So as with everything use your ears where you can before you buy.

Matching is not BS, its physics and the matching charts are meant as a guide ;) The DL-110 compliance is measured at 100Hz, for matching its compliance at 10Hz is much greater (multiply by 1.8) so instead of 8x10-6cm/Dyne its nearer to 14 or 15x10-6cm/Dyne...

Plug that into the charts, add a gram or two for the fixings and you'll find the S2 Improved Fixed Headshell is not as "far off" as it first looks at ~12Hz...probably the reason it works OK :D

I had an Audio Note version of the 1042, IQ3 - that was very good.

Just to be a pedant, the Roksan version is the Roksan Corus and the Reson Reca is the ... Reson version.

All these versions, I think, use exactly the same body... but the replacable needle is different. I wonder what someone like Northwest Analogue could do by fitting a fancy needle on one.

I've got a couple of NOS cartridges and wonder how they will sound when I eventually get around to mounting them on an arm - I keep putting it off incase the suspension has gone and the needle falls off straight away..

I've never had a new cart before.
