View Full Version : Which components would you have in your ultimate 70's system?

Just for fun, if you could have an ultimate, money no object 70's system, which components would you choose?
I was thinking maybe some massive horn loaded JBL speakers, maybe some massive sansui monoblocks, maybe a Sanui 929 TT?

For a start, probably:
- Sony PS-X9 with XL-88
- Yamaha C1/B1
- Leak 3090
Lecson AC1/AP3/FM1
Gale GT2101
Gale GS401a
Yes, OK, it's all about the looks, so which arm and cartridge? The SME that's usually shown on the Gale looks like a Ford V8 stuck in a Lamborghini, so something a bit more space-age is called for. Transcriptors, maybe? Not sure...
Can't think of a suitably wild-looking cartridge either. Any ideas?

To bastardise a famous quote:
"I have the simplest of tastes......
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee133/george-fung/ben-6.jpg
• 1 ML-1 preamplifier
• 2 LNC-2 electronic crossover units and their PLS-151 power supplies
• 6 ML-2 power amplifiers
• 2 Hartley woofer units fitted into (4’ x 3’ x 2’) enclosures
• 4 Quad speakers
• 2 modified Decca ribbon speakers

However i don't really have any desire for flashy £££ gear. Just stuff i fancy the most from 70's i suppose which would really only be one thing..

If you wanna do it on the mega cheap a great sounding amp from the early 70's that go for peanuts Trio 'KA-2000A' The original {'KA-2000'} was the 60's..
For various reasons, my actual stand-out system listening experience from the 70s was in around 1976. We had a customer who wanted to compare the best we could offer with what a friend in the business was trying to sell him. We took a Dual 701 with Shure V15 IV, a Yamaha CR1000 receiver and a pair of Gales. The opposition was Linn LP12/Grace G707/Supex SD900 into Naim NAC12 (I think) / NAP250 and a pair of Dahlquist DQ10s. The music was Christina Ortiz playing Shostakovich 2nd Piano Concerto (EMI ASD3081. A brilliant recording), and the annihilation of our system was total, as was our conversion. A lot has since been written about Linn/Naim hype and all the bullshit that went with it, but my God, that system did things that I'd never heard before, and 40 years later it's still my clearest hifi memory from that era.
I'd love to find an old pair of DQ10s and put them with a good valve system. For those to whom they are not familiar, these are not Quads!

That looks very like an Advent bass driver. I remember the DQ10 and have heard them.
Got the speakers already but I would quite fancy a Pioneer SPEC 9 combo to power them. Source would have to be an RtR, probably a Revox. Add a swiss cheese plant and a floorstanding lava lamp to get that perfect period feel.

What about tuners? What would all go for?
An AKAI AT-580 for me.
I actually had one in my 1st ever stereo system - sounded great and looks yummy imo. :)
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww282/hamish_gill/edb7d4dd.jpg
THE tuner of the 1970s was the Sequerra model 1! Never saw one, but how droolworthy is this?
http://www.highendpalace.com/121100.jpg
I've got a 70's system already and to me it sounds very good - Dual 701/ADC ZLM, Crown IC-150 with bridged D-60's and Spendor BC2's. Sure, the bits have been tweaked here and there, but the fundamentals remain..
For an ultimate system, the deck would possibly be one of the better Sony's (8750 or TTS3000/8000), the power amp a DC300A (I have fond memories of the QMI Gain Cell too and remember the Ampzilla but have no idea how these would stack up today) and speakers, well, either AR LST's or IMF RSPM IV's (big LOUD JBL's too possibly).
Loads of other good stuff, a Naim bolt-up 250 pales into insignificance in the wide scheme of things 1970's and the Naim 12S pre is totally outclassed here by the far more straight-wire-with-gain IC150 once a couple of small details are attended to (four little caps and two cheap op-amps).....

Quad FM3 - I just love the looks of that series. I have an FM4 but that was early 80s I think. Sounds good and is functional but the earlier one had character in spades - great industrial design.

What about tuners? What would all go for?
Well the tuner to go for in the 70's was the Yammi 'CT-7000' However i found a lot of tuners from back then to be good.. The Quad 'FM3' as mentioned is a loverly looking & sounding thing but you need an amp with mains switching as it does not have it's own power switch..
An all Luxman system or an all Accuphase system would be great.
Did Stax do much good stuff in the 70s?

I remember these, an interesting design with its combination of dipole and box mounted drivers - horribly built though and some of the drivers were pretty poor - odd that more speakers don't use three different types of tweeter all at once .... ;).

What was so special about the '70s anyway?
I think the only components from that decade that are of interest to me are: the Decca SC4E cartridge; the B&O MMC20CE cartridge, and the Levinson HQD system (as pointed out by Chris). Oh - and the Audiostatic speaker range from Holland.
I would be curious to hear the Rappaport Pre-1 preamplifier, though I doubt it would improve on more recent designs from other manufacturers.

Certainly more interesting than hifi of the past 20 years IMO.
Well the claptrap published in the Hi-Fi mags of the '70s, viz: the sine qua non of the Linn LP12 turntable and indeed of the whole Linn/Naim hegemony, made for interesting, if frustratingly annoying reading. Fortunately, it all turned out to be complete and utter bullshit!
There were some good products made in the '70s: the Meridian range, Lentek, some Mission products, as well as the introduction of Koetsu cartridges, but otherwise the audio products that most interest me come from the mid to late '60s.

The 80s / 90s is where it's at, where hifi met build quality and over the top designs, not to mention the peak of cassette and vinyl (in my opinion) and the beginning of mega-buck aspirational products . Some may say that's where the rot started to set in but who cares if it's all available relatively cheap today secondhand?

Don't tell me that, destroy my dreams! No, I haven't - the review at the time said they were amazingly 3D..
Did you hear them at a show?
That's a kind of odd thing to sound like though considering the design with the drivers in the "eye" - perhaps it's all in the bass area which sounds like a wardrobe, with the internal bass drivers. Also thought it has some kind of room correction adjustment in the active part, perhaps that wasn't done properly.
Listen to me making excuses for them!

Yes both times at a show. They had plenty of room to 'breathe' and the acoustics of the environment were OK. Some of the other, lesser Cabasse speakers actually sounded better.

Actually, the Ohm Walsh driver is more like the tech used in German Physiks omni speakers. :) Although the GP concept is rather more complex, I think, and uses computer optimised bending wave technology.

Yes and.......??? there has been a constant stream of posts to this thread Andre. In what way do you wish to discuss your obsession with the 60's? Us lot who were born in the late 40's were in our formative years during the 60's so we are hardly immune to its charms:)
Anyone going to start a 50's thread?

Suez, Everest, the Coronation, the end of Rationing, Skiffle. That about covers it doesn't it? Even the 'Eighties were better than the 'Fifties.

The system would have sounded a whole lot better had they been Quads. ;)

Some of actually had a great time but then we were actually doing stuff rather than just watching from the outside. I am pleased to say my memories are very clear. Certainly the first few years were a bit naff but the last six were terrific.
The old chestnut about not remembering etc is just that - ie. bollocks.

Better than that - The Quad full-range electrostatic (now erroneously called the Quad 57) was introduce to the public in 1955. :)

Yep, I was there - and despite consuming certain substances, can remember it quite well.
I think i talk to myself sometime
Sorry André ! I didn't realise that your previous post was a desire to halt all conversation!
I was just expressing what era of hifi I like with the mention of when I was born to give it the same format as other posts.
Of course feel free to to ignore my posts if you don't want to hear my opinions or self-expressions - I'll still post them up though as it's some form of cheap therapy
Unless you meant "I think I WILL talk to myself sometime [soon]" because it's enjoyable?

Good grief no - please - not that one. I know I have made the odd error of judgement during a long life but to insult me like this just as am getting mellow from the odd drop of red grape juice is going to spoil my evening - perhaps.

You know what used to get on my wires in the 70's/80's how a lot of speakers looked the same. Teak Cabinets/Matt black baffle boards..

Each age seems to have its particular favourite style. Now its all tall narrow and deep cabinets with multiple drivers, presumably because of the 'interior design' aspect.

Don't you think it's more like a cost excersize.. It would have thought it a lot easier & cheaper to firstly machine a baffle board up for the units & just give it a quick matt black spray, rather than having to Veneer a board & then machine it for the unit & then have to finish the veneer?
Interesting thread. I'm currently moving over to a vintage system. So far I have bought a nice vintage amp and turntable. Next hurdle is to find vintage speakers that can oust my pair of Proac Response Two S. I am a big AR fan so I'm on the lookout for a pair of AR3a's. I also have a hankering for a pair of Yamaha NS1000.
The amp I bought is a Kenwood Model 500. Here (http://www.thevintageknob.org/kenwood-Model_500.html) is a link to it on the vintage knob
The turntable is a Sony PS-6750 and more info can be found on the Vintage Knob (http://www.thevintageknob.org/sony-PS-6750.html) and Classic Hifi (http://classichifi.info/Sony_PS-6750.shtml).

To update my post above, My seventies system is now complete. I just bought a nice original pair of IMF TLS50 from the pfm classifieds. Just the sound I have been searching for. I couldn't be happier.

Edit. The other change from the last post has been the addition of a DV20XH. Just on the lookout for an ADC LMG-1 headshell now as the DV didn't have sufficent overhang in the original Sony headshell.

I lived in Paris for 10 years and I found Still Game was just the tonic if I'd had a bad time of it dealing with any aspect of the French bureaucracy :)
Very cool Seventies system. And Seventies gas fire too :) You just need a cheaply veneered cabinet with smoked glass door to replace that red stand and you're done.

That gas fire is pure class. I've literally begged my landlady to remove it but she's having none of it. The joys of renting.
If I had a bigger room my kit would sit resplendent on something like this:

Currently Using in the lounge
Pioneer SX 330 Circa 1974
B&W DM2A Speakers Circa 1972
With the low power output of the pioneer at just 7 watts i think it punches above its weight ok NOT THE BEST but it plays music that's for sure.

The era im obsessed with is around 1968 - 1971 that's the era i do all my decor & fitting to. That Telephone you see just plonked there cos it did not have a home at the time is a GPO '706' They were introduced around 1968. It looks simular to the '746' which was introduced in around 1976 but it's not {There's an obvious tell tale sign between the two}..I do also have a 1974 '722' trimphone in blue but still needs some work doing on it....
I might start a topic soon about all my late 60's/early 70's household objects :eyebrows:
Well i'll blow out my Old Hall {Robert Welsh} candle holder & bid you lot goodnight, ip at 4:00am for work..
