Hello everyone
Here we go:
First 'hairs on back of neck' music moment - about 1979, my bedroom, first album Bridge Over Troubled Water, dropped into my first, 'proper', hifi system. The sound quality blew my mind. I couldn't believe how realistic the music sounded and how much more I enjoyed what I was hearing.
The hifi system that made this 'moment' possible - Trio TT, Rotel amp, Teleton speakers (can't even remember which models or where I got them from (probably Comet).
Prior to the above hifi(?!) system I had listened to music via a white coloured Fidelity 'record player' and a little Crown portable cassette recorder (I used to go to a mates house to record stuff played through his speakers - we would sit in his room unable to chat because I didn't want our voices on my recordings:lol:!!).
Armed with my first proper hifi system I soon realised that bands/artists like Pilot, Alvin Stardust, Leo Sayer, etc. were not for me. Friends very kindly introduced me to Rush, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, ELP, Motorhead, etc, etc. and that was it for me, I was hooked. I even saw Motorhead once - it was so stupidly loud I thought I was going to die!
Well, after many years (including my wilderness period which was the mid 1980s - 1990s during which I tried to 'move on' down numerous modern but, ultimately unsatisfying for me, musical dead ends [sorry Simply Red...]) I've finally become happy in my musical skin, enjoying rock/proggy stuff mostly from the mid 60s to about 1987. I must admit though that I will give just about anything a listen (Flower Travellin Band and Wham! anyone?).
My current hifi system is a mix of stuff that includes a brand us Brits have been known to overlook/avoid/ignore/deride (that'll be Accuphase then...):
Goldring Lenco TT on a massive Birch Ply homemade plinth (all up weight, 50lbs), Rega RB300, Reg Elys (holding back the TT's potential, I think)
Ifi Micro phono stage (please check this out whilst it is still a crazy bargain)
Accuphase E-302 integrated amplifier
Accuphase DP57 CD player
Homemade rack - lengths of M20 threaded bar, 18mm MDF, lots of squash balls
Interconnect - QED and a 'Barry special'
A few odds and ends:
Favourite band - Wishbone Ash(seriously!)
Interesting snippet - I sit next to the Grand Wazzoo at work (how good is that?!)
Why are there so few reviews of Accuphase hifi in the British hifi press? It is nothing short of bizarre...I mean, aren't those guys the least bit curious to hear how those huge exquisitely crafted boxes sound? Check this mutha out for example: http://www.accuphase.com/model/dp-900.html
I've no real agenda for joining. I just want to explore my hifi/music hobby in more depth, have a natter, meet people, find new stuff to listen to, etc. I love ALL hifi systems too. Every last one (and why not, eh?). I love listening to other people's hifi systems too. Is it just me or do you ever wonder what a hyper expensive hifi system really sounds like? If you are up for blowing my mind, please get in touch ASAP :):)!
Time to go, I'm going to listen to some David Axlerod (THANKS Grand Wazzoo - I am truly indebted for all your help!) before sleepy time.
