The second round of Album Club in 2014 begins with John's choice of record. This one will sort out the men/ladies from the boys/girls!
Thanks John.

This music combines lots of music genres & I can guarantee there will be music you will not be able to listen to on this as it so eclectic in styles going from exotica to classical to Avant Garde to hard core punk to surf music to………
What it demonstrates is the width of John Zorn's love of music. At times I struggle with some of the music. But then another track will play and it will seduce me. The album is such a mixed bag.
For me Album Club is sharing music and sometimes taking risks with music that perhaps only a few members may like.
I sometimes play Koryojang to show what my system can do with drums or if I want to impress/scare someone with what my system does. I guess my favourite track is Makkot which is very classical in its approach.

I do expect to get mostly 1s for this album choice.

Sorry John

This does absolutely NOTHING for me

Its just a noise and not a nice noise

Do people actually pay for this ?

I am open minded but god that's awful :doh:

0 out of 10 from me :(

Can't say it did much for me either; there were one or two songs that I did not find at all offensive (Leraim and Makkot); frankly though, there were a few others that were rather painful...
A 3/10 for me.

When Its good I really enjoy the album. Its a really weird exception for me as tend to prefer albums that have more consistency
My next album choice will be melodic I promise

I played it last night and greatly enjoyed most of it. I actually thought quite a lot of it was pretty accessible. There were two tracks that seemed pretty tough to get into, but the rest was good. I'll be spinning it again a couple of times before I vote though.

Probably the 2 tracks I cannot handle

Not as bad as I had expected from the comments. However I doubt I will listen again.

Some of the tracks reminded me of other genres e.g. track 6 Leraim had an Eastern flavor while track 8 Makkot had a touch of Tchaikovsky, while track 9 a 1960's flavor. 6/10 from me.

I know I'm a little late to this party, but I saw it was Zorn album that I didn't recognise so couldn't resist.
Bloody marvellous :)
From the comments, I was expecting it to be more in keeping with his Naked City stuff (which I love), but it's a wider - and more interesting - spread of styles and genres. For those who aren't keen, maybe sample a little Torture Garden (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxhg3INmpeo) first, then come back to this - it'll sound positively melodious by comparison ;)
John, if you haven't already, check out his more recent 'Interzone' - cracking album, and similarly eclectic.

Not as bad as I'd expected, I found about 3 of the tracks quite listenable. But overall it was a stylistic mish-mash that made for a collection of pieces rather than a cohesive album. Not one that I'd listen to again.

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. The recording and performances are excellent and it kept my interest through to the end. Some of the tracks are quite hard work, such as The Possessed, but overall it was interesting and gave my system a good workout. It looks like I have quite a few other Zorn albums to try:)
I am voting 7/10.
