I have recently bought a Marantz PM63SE Ki amplifier and I am looking for a good pair of speakers to match with them. I know the best way to decide is to audition them which I have done but it may/probably will sound a lot different with this amp and in my space at home. I must have listened to at least 10 speakers in the last few months and I am still confused. It's not as easy as buying a car! My budget is a grand max and that is if I am buying new. I am open to the used market as well as I have done so in the past. My source is going to be my laptop, size room? Normal London terrace size space. I have been to quite a few shops to listen and also heard a few at the Brighton show a few weeks ago, but most were probably out of my financial league. My most recent ones I was quite impressed with was a pair of pmc db1 golds but it maybe better with the Naim amp it was playing through. Want something that I will stick with for the long haul.
Whats your budget, help us narrow it down for you. :)

Hi Ian,
What size room will you be using them in? What kind of music and at what kind of levels do you like? What kind of furnishing / acoustic doyou have in your listening room? That and as mentioned a budget would help advice :)
Cheers

Room size would roughly be 14ft x 13ft. I listen to electronic music, some indie, rock, jazz, Rnb, Hip hop, classical, new chart stuff. I would normally like to play my music loud but I dread the tap on the door from a neighbour so moderate would work. Don,t like very low listening levels. Furnishing wise my girlfriend likes carpet, rugs, soft furnishings, candles etc. definitely not cold.
I think to be sure you need to hear what ever speaker you like in your own home. Can you ask the PMC dealer if you can get buy or return as its the only way to be sure
Hi Ian,
No specific recommendation but a couple of generic comments:
1. Get hold of the May 2014 Hi-Fi Choice Magazine. It has a grouptest of speakers in your budget.
2. The most important combination of hi-fi is the Amplifier / Speaker combo. So I would echo the advice about a home demo. If you have to demo in the shop at least take music that you know.

I use a pair if PMC Db1i's and they are excellent.
I listened to many other small speakers before I choose these and am glad I made this choice.
So if you require small speakers for a moderately sized room, you cannot go far wrong with the Db1i speakers.
When around second hand, they range from £400 to £600 on fleebay.
The Db1i's are the last ones produced with a different tweeter set up compared to the earlier ones.
The guys at PMC in Luton are very helpful if you give them a phone call. They will even date the speakers if you have the serial numbers.
Good luck in your search.
