Does anyone else have the same problem as me?
I have my main collection of cd's in a couple of racks
However I take some cd's out of the rack and play them but they end up in a little pile next to the hifi, and then I repeat it and take some more out and make another little pile of cd's
If I carry on like this then I will eventually have all my cd's in multiple little piles around the hifi.... :doh:
I seem to get to about 10 odd cd's in these little piles, but for some reason they stick and don't go back into the rack.... :mental::mental:

The old Barbairian is painfully orderly with anything like this, also learned how to discipline himself with how much media he needs to keep.Very systematic in his filing habbits..

Grant did you mean you have little piles like I do or are you super organised like Andre?
The cd's do eventually go back into the rack bit it seems liek I listen to 10 or so cd's constantly until I have played them to death, hense the little piles, and then I get bored of those 10 and then pick another 10 or so to go into the next little listening piles

The most current playing pile is.... let me go and count....!!!..... actually it's nearly 30 now..... I obviously have a bit of a problem and i'm running out of hifi floor space...
Just organising my collection, got to build another one of these and I'm sorted

Err my pile is next to the rack. It's the newer stuff waiting for racking.

File - based audio is the best answer - all of my ripped CDs can't mess the place up as they are neatly boxed in the attic :)

My current CD playing pile is about 50, in two untidy piles atop the right-hand speaker. Upstairs there's another playing pile of about 40, sat on the early '80s wall unit that got banished to the top room.

I favour the Case Logic approach. Fits my minimalist stylings.

Used to be around 600 CD's piled up around the place, really unsightly but all are safely packed away now :D
Its a bugger when youve amassed a pile of around 40 and cant find the one your looking for..happens to me all the time.

I hate that myself - so depressing when you see a big bin bag full of CD cases and booklets all descarded, presumably because the CDs are all in some case logic case. What about the booklets which say so much about the band or their "feel" , nice touches like secret sheets stuck behind the CD holder as per the CD of Kid A I bought at a charity shop the other day? You have to dismantle the case to see it.
What about digipaks with arty photos on the front, just as beautiful as their 12" equivalents?
Sadly my experience of other people's case logic collections are CDs of "Buddha Beats II" and half of them scratched to almost unusable status.
Bit like forgoing nicely built and superbly made furniture for something from IKEA instead - everything temporary.

My idea set-up would be bare floorboards with lines of LP's leaning against the wall and some kind of equivalent for CDs - guess they have to be piles. Bohemian or something..

I'm pulling yer leg btw, last time I entered a John Lewis I was dressed in work clothes covered in paint & plaster dust... The tuts were audible. I like their food but they seem to attract a lot of snobby wa#kers dressed in tweed... T'was Dorset though...

And these piles you refer to, I understand that there are creams available to combat the problem. :)
I do the same with vinyl, always a pile of stuff that's being played, that is out of the rack

Being a disorganised type I must say I like the concept of file based systems, but I haven't found one yet that I like the sound of.
I thought my iPods sounded good until I connected them to a decent system.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
My son recently bought a professional USB D/A A/D converter for about £200, which sounds better than any I have heard before, and certainly much better than on-board computer sound cards. We used it to make digital copies of some treasured vinyl LP's and the results were quite outstanding. However I cannot remember what it is called. :doh:

Build your own, lots of help and info on the Computer Audio forums? Everything I know about file based audio I learnt myself from the net and by component testing, all you need is patience and time. The sound you get from a good file based audio system will depend largely on the DAC, then the hardware/software and power supply. If you don't like the sound of 'commercial' ones, then that's more down to the DAC IMO. With your own you can choose a DAC to suit your tastes, but get the front end right and you are more than half way there.

Each of these boxes stores 100 discs/covers in plastic (Wilkinson) slip sleeves, so that's 200 right there (£2.75 for two boxes at IKEA). And I have around 3,000 CD's ripped to FLAC on a 2TB Western Digital RED hard drive. Works for me and the only thing I discard and recycle is the plastic jewel case, I keep everything else and I scan the disc, cover art, booklet and rear liner etc to a .pdf document to read as and when required, before I archive them away in the IKEA boxes. If they are cardboard 'digipaks' I keep them whole and rack those on an IKEA Benno, but I scan those too so I never have to hunt around for either the music or the sleeve notes and I don't suffer from piles ;)
I also live in Dorset and I shop at Waitrose, so I guess that makes me a snobby wa*ker then :lol: I have never worn tweed in my life, but I like living here, I like shopping in Waitrose and I like being tidy so :ner:

Thats it tim, exactly what i do - CDee's in wallets, i use 'D' shaped inner bags to protect the discs before slipping them in the wallets. The best thing to do is use the old Index filing cabinets {The ones with the large square Drawers} You got your card plates on the front for quick id..

As I posted before, I have to catalogue the collection for the insurance company. I can today reveal that all the vinyl and the CDs are separated by genre, alphabeticalised and stacked neatly in either their racks if they are part of the home collection or in their really useful boxes in the unit, if they're part of my trading stock. Just need to do the cassettes and I will feel as smug as a..... er smug thing :lol:

Holy thread revivalBatman I know, but after a long search i found THESE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111359362469?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649) Napa Valley Cassette Tape Storage Cases and i have just imported them, probably the nicest cassette racks ever made. Now mounted in the living room and being filled and filed by the Mrs., smug is the word :dance:

Can't agree with that, I have music playing all day every day, and not a CD to be seen around my Hi-Fi - or a CD player for that matter and all I play is digital, but I get your point ;)

Something very similar used to be sold in the UK. I can't recall who imported them but I sold those and CD versions back in the late 80s early 90s in the audio shop I worked in. Nice find, I could do with cassette storage units.
