Phono cable phenomenon

I know this may be a strange post but tonight something happened to my system which I can't explain which improved the sound quite noticeably.

The Interconnect I use from my VPI TT to pre amp was rebuilt to take into consideration grounding issues etc after the first cable i had caused a lot of hum and interference when it went anywhere near my wall which is situated at the back of the TT. The new cable (Chord Chameleon Vee 3 ) eliminated any hum or ground issues totally and I have used this for the last year with it contacting the rear wall without any issues.

However tonight I moved the cable away from the wall and taped it to the table so it was not touching the wall and the sound quality in every area has improved significantly.

Is this possible or am I imagining things:scratch

Just enjoy what you're hearing and don't let anyone tell you that you're imagining things.

Must be magic tape you are using.

Remove it and use some hairy string instead and if the sound deteriorates then market the tape for £50 a roll. If the hairy string improves the sound yet again, then sell that for £100 a ball.

do a quick search on AoS for 'cable touching wall' or something similar. You may be surprised how often it's been mentioned!

Is there a power cable embedded in the wall there - a light switch, or wall light, directly above the turntable?

Hi Mark, I think there is a power cable in the wall even though there is no light switch or sockets near. I think it is routed to supply power to another part of the house. As I mentioned the new IC cable does not introduce any noise as such but must still be affected to a certain degree by whatever is running through the wall.

I am surprised however how much it has affected the sound quality of my system especially in soundstage, dynamics, transparency and detail.

I have not read any articles on how much power cables can affect ICs but as this is the most sensitive in the system I surpose I should not be surprised.

Well done James, this post will prompt me to tidy my cables at the back of my rack which quite frankly are a mess with some running parallel with other and some touching the wall and others that are no longer used, will report back later.

thanks for the suggestion, I had a look and found a thread concerning 'interconnects touching walls' and it explains all. Good recommendations from AOS folk and in particular Marco who makes quite a point of system cable dressing and the importance of keeping cables away from walls.

It is not my imagination, it certainly makes a difference, and in my case quite a big one!
