PAT Testing Course.?

Hello Lads,

I was looking through a brochure for a local community center and i spotted that there doing a day for a PAT Testing course and was wondering weather it would be worth a go. Do you think they would do things like testing amplifiers and other assorted equipment to do with HI-FI. Just thought it maybe useful to learn about this stuff and its a 1 day 8 hour course and its free. :scratch: Not sure at present as theirs a lot to do with electronics but not the kind i am interested in any help would be much appreciated.

The course is for the testing of portable appliances to ensure that they are safe to use.

PAT testing I've seen done normally involves plugging something into a machine and listening to it's beeps or looking at it's lights.

When it fails you put it to one side and label it up to say it failed and then leave it for someone else to sort out repair/scrap.

But hey, you likely need an official certificate to allow you to do it, probably hence the course.

8 hours seems a long time for what I think they do

I've watched a gadgee doing pat testing and unless there is more to it than meets the eye you could learn to do it in ten minutes. I've never taken a course in anything that didn't take ten times longer than it really needed to.

Basically, it's to Test small Portable Appliances to check that they're earthed and not leaking current.

If the blokes who came round the other week to PAT test the gear in my office have more than 100 IQ points between them, I'd be rather surprised! (and there were about 7 of them)

If you get a free Code of Practice book they fetch about £30. A bit cynical but...
