I built the Seas idunn kit that Madisound do about a year ago and love them.

The ones i made will become the rear speakers when i finally get a theater room and i will build some new fronts.
I was tossing up whether to build another set of the idunn's but with two woofers and do them as an MTM format in a tower cabinet. Or i will spend the extra and build up a set of these LX521's here http://www.linkwitzlab.com/LX521/Description.htm

Has anyone heard these 521's at all? What were your impressions? Are they worth building or is it better for me just to continue with the idunns so they all match?

They would be used for music and movies. Any opinions would be a great help.
Thanks

I not heard them but like the design approach I seen a few youtube clips and I reckon they should sound really good. If I was to build Open baffles again these would top my list to build

I think they are the newest version after the Orion's that linkwitz has done.

What sort of amp do you think I'd need to run? I've seen one guy running 5 amp split into left bass right bass left mid right mid and the pair of tweeters. I don'treally have the budget to do this.
Would i need some sort of multi channel amp to split the signal between the woofers and mids/tweeters?
This is where Ihave no clue . It looks like you can buy a dsp for this kit but I think some people have just built a crossover to cover the lot .

This is the amp they are recommending http://www.ati-amp.com/AT6012.php which is not a cheap amp. I think you hit the biggest issue for this type of system but would imagine this system sounding amazing.
DSP would give you a lot of control I keep thinking of trying DSP with my set up one of these days I might do it. At the moment just using DSP with the bass and it has improved the bass, but takes time to get used to getting the best out of it Thinking this http://www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-4x10-hd sometime in the future
Why not consider different Open Baffle designs so not so complex with amplification This would keep costs down. Their plenty of different options about that will give you great sounds

a company called miniDSP make some very interesting modules that could not only form active crossovers but apply DSP (not surprising given the name). I've been looking at driving my bass drivers actively and this is the approach I am likely to take.

Wowzers, $3k amp.
hmmm. That blows the budget a bit.

Do you have any other recommendations for open baffle kits that have box plans and crossover plans available? I dont know much about designing my own boxes or crossovers so thats why this kit through madisound looked good.

I suppose i was only running this way as i had Seas drivers in my current setup already.

The Hawthorne I use is very easy to build and give a guide http://www.hawthorneaudio.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1195&sid=11b89d375eba179fbe36ab57501e2eec Quite cheap as well I can talk you through different options the owner is really helpful and good supportive forum I use a Bantam to power and go active in the Bass A lot of people use Spud amps They also respond really well to tweaking to improve them
This look like a decent project but never heard any http://www.pureaudioproject.com/product/open-baffle-hardware-kits/
A friend has recently used Mark Audios 12p Alpairs and bass drivers that are very good and cheap to build I think Ali T has heard a few
http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/0606/visation_nobox_bb_loudspeaker.htm These work well
So plenty of choice
Open Baffles are really easy to build the major issue for most people is the design is big

I would strongly recommend that if you are interested in building an open baffle design you make it your mission to hear them first. For a long time open baffle designs appealed to me too - but the reality is that I've yet to hear a design I've liked.

Thanks for all the info.
I am thinking i will make a set of floor standing MTM Seas idunn's to use as fronts and have a sub with them. That will cover my theater room.

Then i will build a set of open baffles to run separately for music.
I'm pretty sure this is how addiction begins. I have already justified in my head that it will be better to have a separate music area with turntable/CD player and DAC/Amps setup :)

I agree with Mark about hearing Open Baffles before you buy they not for everyone I love mine. Loads of resolution scale and speed suits me fine
Yes be careful this can be a very addictive path to take. Mark if you ever get to London give me a call I cannot say you will like my OBs but they are different to what you heard
I know a few people that use Open Baffles in a Home theatre situation

Thanks John, very kind of you and I would be very interested in hearing your speakers but unfortunately I haven't been to London in many years.

Analogue Alchemy make a speaker called the Sound Master that is the LR Orion design (presumably made under licence). I've heard these twice now - the first time I was profoundly unimpressed, the second time they were a bit better but still nothing I could get excited about.

OK, after talking to the guys at Madisound, i have decided i am going to build another set of idunn's as floor standers with side firing L26ROY subs at the base.

Once i've ordered the drivers i will have to ask a few questions on here since i dont have any experience on box design.

Then once they're done i'll build some open baffles to see how they go.

Look forward to the build Alex
Plenty of people that can help you with box speakers
I would imagine the Orion's would be nothing special in the bass looking at the design Mark but looking at the Lab LX521 It ticks a lot of boxes for me and I would imagine a very different beast

Yeah, would love to hear the Lab LX521.

Yeah, would love to hear the Lab LX521.

So would I..the amplification for it would put me off a little as it is a pricey way to build a speaker system, but drivers are all top notch and the design is exceptionally considered. The 521 is the only other speaker system that I've so far seen using the same driver that I use in the Rhapsodys (it uses it for the mid/woofer).
