View Full Version : Newspapers - Are any of them worth Tuppence?
Thought I would open this discussion up here since it got closed down in the hi-fi section of the forum, which is fair enough. Lots of people seem to detest the Mail and Express but in my experience these people when pressed usually turn out to be Guardian readers...
The Mirror is dreadful, though and as a scouser I am not allowed to read the Sun (although I do occasionally browse the complimentary copy in the Chinerse takeaway). Sometimes I read the Express and Mail if I am at my mother's house and they don't seem so bad to me, so what exactly is wrong here?
There isn't a newspaper that really suits my needs, which are: 1) dry, un-opiniated fact-based news items; 2) no opinions (did I already say that?); 3) no celebrity shite; 4) no allegiance to a political party; 5) a world view, rather than navel-gazing UK-only news.
The red-tops are a joke and in no way deliver what I would call unbiased news items, the Express seems to harp on about certain stories to the nth degree, the Mail is simply all-round shocking and the BBC online hopelessly lefty socialist. I suppose the Times or Telegraph may be the closest to my needs but they're not very close at all. Is there any paper or online news out there that does a good job?

If I have time, I read the Guardian, Telegraph and Mail on line. Of the 3, I prefer the Telegraph, it has the best writers I think. The Mail money section is good. I am a scouser as well and detest the Sun with a passion. You get a more balanced view if you read a few papers.

The Mail is awful, far worse than the Express (and I'm not a Guardian reader). Both papers are obsessed with feeding the paranoia of their readers, with endless health scares, doom and gloom about house prices, immigration and just about everything else.
My parents used to buy the Mirror until it started printing Sun-type pictures; after that the only papers they bought were the Liverpool Echo and the Sunday Post. I've switched from the Times to the Telegraph to the Independent then back to the Telegraph, but nowadays find nothing of much interest in any newspaper (the Telegraph seems to be morphing into 'Hello' magazine, with pages of celeb gossip).
Is there any paper or online news out there that does a good job?
Have you tried the Beano, Martin?

Can't say I have a preference for any of the newspapers as I think they are all crap.
I will dabble into one or two of the online freebies now and again because putting my hand in my pocket and pay to read the shite they print is beyond the pale.
I agree with others about this relentless obsession with "celebrity" and who the heck wants to know about some starlet that nobody has ever heard of sunning her wonderful "toned bikini body" in some far-flung exotic location when it's pissing down with rain and freezing cold outside as you are reading that sort of crap. As for the term "wardrobe malfunction" used when some bimbo's tits fall out, I wish they would realise that a goodly percentage of the population also has tits, but they actually manage to dress themselves without any such mishaps.
The worst offence by far is the culture of "copy and paste" most of them are now engaged in. You can read EXACTLY the same story in almost any paper copied word for word, letter by letter, including all the grammar and spelling mistakes to boot. It pisses me off when they have lifted a 'story' from the USA and we get the USA grammar and spelling untouched. Even the gross errors like saying "A Boeing 757 crash landed at XXXX airport today" and you see a picture of a mangled plane on the runway but it is sporting four propellers, which is regularly slipping under the knowledge radar these days. I despair.

Just this morning, on the BBC News (that paragon of dumbing down), they reported on 'acoustic pings' no longer coming from the black boxes :doh:

Never bought a newspaper in my life. I aint nosey see..

I'm trying to recall how that bit from 'Yes Minister' goes. it's something like:
The Times is read by the people who run the country
The Telegraph is read by the people who used to run the country
The Daily Mail is read by their wives
The Financial Times is read by the people who own the country
The Express is read by people who think the country should be run the way it used to be run
The Mirror is read by people who think they should run the country
The Morning Star is read by people who think another country should run the country
And the people who read The Sun don't care who runs the country so long as she's got big tits.
