My local Cash Converters, are selling a really old Trio KP 2022 turntable.....for nearly £100 !!!!!

When I asked if they were having an April fool joke, they replied that they had set the price by collating info from e bay.

There was one on there a year ago that sold for under a fiver, so I'm wondering why they priced what is a very average TT at that price?

The prices are not set in stone, you can negotiate with them. I know haggling is niot regarded as very 'English' but needs must. Go in and low ball them and you can get 50% off the sticker price, easy. They are still making money as they pay the square root of f**k all for the stuff they get in.

Oh....I never ever pay full price there, and always haggle.

What does amuse/piss me off though, is when I have sold them something of quality and in mint condition, they have given me the lowest ferkin price possible!

Much of the stuff in my local cash converters has been defective. They don't test it properly and don't have staff who know what they are looking at anyway.

I know a couple of people who have had defective items from them and myself bought a beautiful Sony TA-5650 V-FET amp from them, only to find one channel about 9db down on output. It wasn't apparent on demo and they argued the toss like mad when I asked for a refund, until I suggested I'd take the amp to an independant electronics lab for assessment and bung that cost onto what they owed me and claim in court. Then they coughed up. Next week it was back in their window.

An aquaintance asked me to service a Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference turntable for him, he'd only paid £50 but it was in such bad condition, with bits missing, I said there was little I could do with it without loads of parts. It wouldn't even spin at the right speed, as the hydraulic regulator was broken. What do you know, a couple of days later, there it is in cash converters window at £395. I knew it was the same one from various marks on it.

Very true. I saw a pair of big 3 way Goodmans speakers with 12 inch bass drivers and level controls in a crack convertors one time. I think they were asking a ton. I got the bloke to hook them up and it was quite clear that one of the bass drivers had coil rub. I pointed this out to the fellow and he had to listen very hard before he agreed with me even though it was blatantly obvious. 'No problem' he says 'we can fix that'. Yeah, good luck. Don't know if they continued to try to sell them 'as is' since I never went back.

You do get the odd bargain, and I mean odd bargain. I picked up a NAd 3020 for £30 and a marantz cd67 ki for £30 and several weeks weeks later a standard marantz cd63 for £15. The NAD and cd63 not sit pride of place in my mates system whilst the 67ki was sold on for a modest profit.

With all the drive units pushed in and damaged and the cabinets dented, scratched and in pretty poor state. They wanted £1100 for them :eek: :lol: a joke. However I have seen nice bits and bobs for little, and having had a couple of Sky + boxes wonky from them, they have just replaced them with no hassle; so my experience re service - admittedly not hifi - has been very good so far.

Ive noticed that condition is irrelevant, i see this with everyday folk anyway so i guess seeing something battered does not matter to certain buyers..

In the case of the Usher's I saw they were unusable, so went well past being a bit tired.

The amount of junked up space monkeys flogging fones and tv's in our local cash convertors is getting beyond the joke. Can be quite funny listening to them trying to eek more money for their item. They used to stock pretty good affordable hi fi gear a while back. But sadly no more . Anything decent sells quick and were left with the pishanto that no one will buy.
