Marantz cd player clean up

My marantz cd 50 cd player keeps jumping a track being played.
I think the optical may need a cleanup.
Could you guys advise me on how to do this?

Does it jump at the same point, despite which CD is being played - or does it only do it on one CD? If it does it to all CDs then it is likely to be hardened grease that is applied to the CD sled in the factory when they are assembled. The grease is supposed to help the sled slide easily, but over the years it hardens and can cause problems.

Yes it happens eith the first 3-4 tracks in every cd

I have never had any problems with my own CD players, but I have helped out a few friends by cleaning the lens with clean cold water on a cotton bud. These things seem to collect a surprising amount of dust and dirt, especially in smokers' houses.

I also find that simply exercising the sled gently often frees it up, although I have never had the courage to take a transport mechanism apart other than changing belts and so forth.

All of this should be done with the machine switched OFF of course.

I had a marantz cd63 which was sticking and as previously mentioned the sled can be easily cleaned. I'm as total numpty and I managed it.

Lasers are sensitive to electrostatic electricity so make sure you at least ground yourself by touching something grounded before you start - a radiator, casing of an amp which is earthed and plugged in etc. Don't stroke that cat on a nylon carpet before hand in other words..

Should be fine (I've never zapped anything I've fiddled with, err electronically speaking).

I have cleaned a laser or two before on friend's machines (real cheap midi systems for example which keep skipping) and simply lightly rubbed the lens with a bit of lint free paper cloth like blue-roll (the roll of blue tissue paper you can buy in your local general store) and sometimes even just dry does the trick!

But it probably is the lubrication on the slide rails as pointed out - clean off the old by wiping it off with lint free cloth and put something else on (if it's short term on a cheap machine, I've even used vasaline lip balm before, the pure non-flavoured type - not sure of how long it lasts though)

Cd50 uses a cdm4 swing arm transport - no sled. Potential cause is the disc clamp bearing ; a ball bearing sits on a white plastic insert, over time a dimple appears - try cleaning/regreasing first, otherwise remove dimple with file or a new sheet over top of it.
