Two new projects vintage 1963

Hi All,

I have been laid up this week (phelbitis in my leg meaning I can hardly walk) so no jumble sales or crate digging at the weekend :( However, I hate to be bored so I checked out the websites of some of my favourite sellers and came up with this

Both circa 1963, the Rogers Cadet2 speakers use a lovely old elliptical ELAC unit with an Alnico magnet, in a horn loaded enclosure and the Armstrong 221 amp is, as you can in a mad home made enclosure, the jury is out on whether that stays or not. It's the only model of Armstrong Amp I have never owned before and I'm looking for a matching tuner. I struck a very good deal for the twoand will pick them up on Tuesday. Once restored I will offer them for sale as a system, with either a Lenco GL75 or a Garrard, either a 301 or a 4HF.

Having checked around today, I can't find any of that original grill cloth. On most restores I use a black, very thin jersey weave that is acoustically transparent. What do people think about the aesthetics of changing the cloth?

Who's going to notice? Hardly anybody will remember these speakers, let alone what the exact appearance of the grille cloth was.

The old grill cloth looks intact. You could remove it, treat it with stain remover and lay it in a bath of warm water for a wash, then dry it laid out flat. It may come up well enough to re-use.

The cloth looks similar to the old Acoustic Research stuff which was "open weave Irish linen".

Carefully removing the cloth and putting it in your washing machine on a gentle cool wash may work wonders. Always works a treat on mk2 Golf seats.

No, don't machine wash. The grille cloth has unbound edges and will fray to pieces in a washing machine.

Rob Holt (Zero Gain) has threads with his restoration of some AR's including the grilles. You may possibly get some inspiration from there?

I'll try the eBay link Dave it looks right. I think my black cloth
looks better, but a Japanese collector didn't buy my BC1s 'cos I had fitted
non original gold binding posts, so I want them as original as poss

Finally got these picked up, plus a couple of pairs of nicely made Dynatron speakers, these are three way, stand/floor mount size and full of classic Goodmans drivers. Pics and further examinations to follow, I may break one pair for spares. The Rogers horns need all the cloth panels, front and sides replaced and the nickel binding posts and a couple of bit of laminate need doing. Haven't measured the xover yet though.

I see a bit of work for a nice result, least I hope so.
