I recently picked up a Marantz CD63 MKII which has been very impressive so decided to start some basic modifications. Yesterday I removed the PCB and disabled the Head Phone Circuit (removed C 901/902 and U 139/140) and the Muting Circuit (removed QN 24/25/91/92 and RN 27/28), fitted an IEC and lined the chassis with sound deadening. Now it is all reassembled the optical drive has developed a fault which service mode identifies as Error 12 / SLED Error. I have uploaded a video to show how the drive is operating, all it does is spins the cog whilst the pickup stays at the back of the transport.

Just about to pull the board and check for mistakes, any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Darren, I modded a CD63 which I got for £20. There is a lot to be gained from reading the mods for these on Diyaudio. I up-graded the power supply caps to Panasonics, removed the HDAM modules and took the feed direct to a new pair of phono sockets, disabled the H/P socket, removed the current limiting resistors in the various places recommended (about 10 or 12) and replaced them with low noise diy regulators, and fitted by-pass tants to the dac chip - and finally fed the new regs with a separate supply and a JLH ripple eater.

In so far as your problem is concerned, I would check that the ribbon cable that you will have removed to get the board out is re-seated properly. I would ask a Q on diyaudio about your problem as someone is likely to have encountered the same. I think it is likely to be a power related problem.

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the advice, checked all ribbon cables, Display to PCB, PCB to Transport, Transport to Pickup and checked continuity where I can all check out OK. It was after reading some of the DIY Audio threads that I decided to start modding this so as you say the question may be better asked there.

I think we have the same speakers SB-4500? What do you think of them?

I am a little bit mad and probably quite strange. Unless I have a pair of monster speaks with 15" bass units I never feel that anything smaller gives the effortless presentation I crave for. At the moment I a running the Technics with a pair of Klipsch. IMO this combination gives the sound I like, great soundstage, bags of detail and great bass. I don't find the presentation fatiguing at all, and if you want to turn it up it just gets better and better. Oh yes, I have now got mild tinnitus.......perhaps I should turn it down occasionally!

Sorry Rob, I'm a bit confused by this are you saying you run the SB 4500's with another pair of speakers? If so how do you have them setup?

Did you employ any form of static protection when removing the PCB / ribbon cables ?

Sounds like a dead laser block to me.

Yes! they are run in parallel with very muscular monoblocks. I love live music and this gets you very close to the bass guitar and drums coursing through your bones! I was going to keep it a secret, (but i'll just tell you OK) I have 14 separate drive units to make this heavenly mulch........oh yes and 2 Subs:eek::lol: Told you I was barking:mental:

I had mine in and out on numerous occasions without any probs? When I said a PS problem. of course I meant voltage. I have modded several PS1's and the laser on these seems to drift (although that may be a different problem altogether)

Can't be ruled out entirely, will probably order a new Pick Up, thanks.

If the sled is not moving forward it won't be the laser pickup. Sounds like a sensor not picking up that the tray has closed.

Hi Stan,

Thanks for the info, I've now managed to damage the ribbon cable on the pick up effin about with it :(. Just bought another modded CD63 and CD67 on here so will have plenty of spares and mods to play with :).

Look forward to hooking it up to one of your DAC's in the near future :eyebrows:. I'm guessing as I've been unable to find one you don't do a USB ADC?

Cheers.

Yesterday was the first chance I've had to revisit this, not really knowing where to go with it I "undid" everything I'd done, refitting all the components, powered back on and it worked! After a bit of reading up I realised the Sled error was caused by removing the wrong jumpers namely U139 & 140, I was looking at documentation on the CD67 and not the CD63 (I have both a CD63 & 67) another case of RTFM Properly! Removed the right jumpers and capacitors to disabled the headphone circuit and the CDP still works.

Not the first stupid mistake I've made and I seriously doubt it will be the last .

Tut tut! That's always a dangerous assertion to make and unfortunately an all too common one!

It makes people scrap perfectly good lasers when problems lie elsewhere - the laser is the one resource that can't be replenished.. Everyone should try all else before deciding it's the laser. IMHO of course.

 As you rightly say assumption is the mother of all fuck ups...

Contrary to popular delusion China are churning out thousands of pattern lasers, especially these cheap Philips jobbies. If it were one of the rare/sought after models do you honestly think I would be that daft ?
