Some of you may know that my day job is a cancer surgeon. Over the last few weeks, I have been helping Lord Saatchi (Maurice not Nigella’s ex- Charles) with the Medical Innovation Bill. This new piece of legislation is now in public consultation. If it receives a positive public response, then it will become law in this Parliament.

So what is it, you may ask? It is to do with people with life threatening illness eg cancer, motor neurone disease, a child with muscular dystrophy. Currently doctors feel inhibited to do anything new, when all else has failed. This is partly due to the fear of medical litigation, if a novel treatment goes wrong.

This new Bill will permit doctors to innovate responsibly with safeguards to protect patients from charlatan doctors. It has widespread support from cancer charities, patients and senior doctors. So please do have a look and comment. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change the culture, so that this and future generations can benefit.

Read the links Charlie has posted folks - its essential that this bill becomes law and corrects a ludicrous situation where the fear of litigation prevents innovative treatment of life-threatening disease.

Hope it's only temporary but the petition link won't work for me - overloaded? - hope so :) . I will keep returning until I get through. Anybody else having same trouble?
