My avatar depicts the frustration of someone who got into a career in forestry because they love the outdoors, but is almost never able to get out into the woods any more.

Now I don't know about you but somehow I think showing that to a bunch of spotty 14/15 year olds is more likely to elicit a reaction of "wow, where can I get me some of that stuff" rather than "oh, how dreadful, I must never try that." Me, I just find it funny, but hey that's just me

The avatar I shall display is HAL from 2001 A Space Odyssey. I have it as the desktop background on my HTPC on a 42 inch display. Now if I can only figure out how to get the error messages changed in Vista to incorporate HAL 9000 phrases.

First of all allow me to be pedantic about the word avatar. In Hindu mythology an avatar is the manifestation or incarnation of a god. This word seems to have been appropriated by those people who want to reinvent themselves in cyberspace in ‘Second Life’ or other virtual worlds – as if living a ‘first life’ were not wonderful enough. Anyway I digress.

My avatar (sic) is of Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom and knowledge. Bodhisattvas are mortals who having attained enlightenment, choose not to take the final step into nirvana or extinction and so escape the cycle of birth and rebirth. Rather, they have elected to remain behind to help other mortals achieve enlightenment. They are roughly the Buddhist equivalent to saints.

Manjushri’s purpose was to lead beings in an inquiry whereby they could discover the true nature of reality. For that reason, he is usually depicted displaying the two tools essential to that investigation: in his right hand he wields the double-edged sword of logic or analytic discrimination and in his left, a text on Buddhist teaching. Manjushri's sword of discriminating wisdom is tipped with flames to show that it severs all notions of duality. It can cut away delusion, aversion and longing, to reveal understanding, equanimity and compassion. Manjushri is depicted as a youth suggesting that age is not a necessary precursor to wisdom.

The avatar thus combines three of my interests: comparative religion, buddhist iconography and travel (I have been all over the far east to look at the various iconographic styles). The depiction of my avatar is done in the Tibetan style; whose culture was virtually destroyed by the Red Guard during the Cultural Revolution – hence the political comment.

I like to think that there is a connection to the three Alexandrian principles that form the ethical guidlines of AoS

Most certainly yes Barry, I for one was fascinated reading it and I'll bet my bottom dollar others will be along very soon with similar sentiments. I spent 2 spells totalling 15 months based in Singapore in the early 80s, where as you may know, there is a sizeable Indian population with the attendant temples. I was fascinated by them then, but found it difficult to get 'close' to any Indian person to learn more. Our company was 99% Chinese and, whilst I made good friends with several of them as individuals I could not accept how they felt completely comfortable with what was, and still is I understand, a very authoritarian (but benevolent ??) dictatorship. Whilst Singapore was where they lived they ALL looked to China as their homeland which was incapable, in their eyes, of doing any wrong, no matter what the circumstances. I kept in touch with a few after I left Singapore, and revisited them a couple of times when on holiday there, but good friends or not, we had to change the subject when Tianamen(sp?) Square or Tibet came up. In their eyes, all the protestors were properly dealt with, in both circumstances. :scratch::scratch::scratch:
Anyway, enough from me - I look forward to trying to persuade you to expand on your theme.

240V is naff all to worry about in all honesty, i can remember loads of times i got zapped by (admittedly current limited) 4.5KV flash testing due to :cool: the night before. All part of the fun imo :) 240V tingles, try 5 or more kilovolts from a high frequency inverter & see how you like scorched flesh :eek:

I change my Avatar regularly because I have yet to establish a true identity on the AoS. Although I still have bits and peices of Quad and Sugden equipment I have moved on and should perhaps change my name as it does not truly reflect where I am today.
My current Avatar is a photograph of a photograph of my grandfather working at his bench together with the artefacts associated with his business then. Clockmaker / Watchmaker / Jeweller / Optician!!?? When I was very young he would take me with him when he went to service and mend the clocks in pubs, chapels, and police stations in the Swansea Valley! He was a man I admired, looked up to and still do to this day, although he has been gone a long time.
Maybe I should have followed in the family business? Perhaps I saw the dawn of electronics and microchips sounding the death knell of clockwork and decided that my future lay elsewhere!!

Hmmm! I recieved a 240V 'belt' across the chest (i.e. heart)! I only lived to tell the tale, because I was literally thrown off the stool I was standing on due to muscle spasm. The mains circuit was protected by a 60A fuse! Bloody wonder I'm still alive.

Don't joke about electric shocks. Remember "volts can jolt, but mils (milliamperes) can kill". Especially where the mains supply is concerned. The power stations have gigawatts of power ready to pump into you, if you're careless!

I am sure you had all worked out mine is my little girl, who is now 22 months, and it grew out of when she was born and everyone said she was the spitting image of her daddy so I started using her picture on Facebook, and then when I found forums it kind of stuck. I am becoming old, I like vintage equipment and still often use magnetic tape. The recorder; a Stellavox SU8 was desiged and built by Mr Georges Quellet who is a bit of a genius, which I am not.

But for peeps who really don't know it's actor Patrick McGoohan in his "The Prisoner" series role. It was made in the sixties and was one of those great TV series which made an big impact on the viewers.
I was only a kid but I can watch it now (as dated as it looks) and still enjoy it.
I'm all for remakes but the American remake would never be able to get that dark aspect of the original over to the viewers.

My father had the '3000E' V6 Mk.1.. this model was the top of the range & very fast, probably the fastest car they produced over here at the time..1970-72.. The latter ones were best at 138BHP, 0-60 in around 8 seconds, Top speed 122 mph. good going for over 40 year ago.

The Tickford was only available in white, red or black - Mike, I have a feeling you are thinking about the Capri 280 - the final Capri ever, which was only available in Brooklands Greeen (and in fact is often referred to as the "Brooklands Capri.") Whatever, they're all fab, though they were a bit naff a few years ago! :lol:

Was offered a RS3300 (only two done by Chris Craft Racing for Ford Dealer in Dunstable) road going. The second one did not have the suspension mods once the garage saw the bill for the first one. As soon as I said the G'friend might drive it, he warned me off it. Twisted (when revved) better than a 427 Mustang!

Saw some white ones and blue ones round Newport Pagnell. I thought it was only the Capri 280 Brooklands that was in BRG. Tried one of these near M5/M4 Bristol, frightening understeer, actually dangerous. Actually worse than Sapphire Cosworth. Waited and ordered whaletail - best car Ford ever made IMO. Had 9 new RS's in under 5 years.

When marketing Ram, Michell and Setton, we had in the warehouse, Alfa GTV, Lancia HPE, Lotus Eclat Turbo, Alfa Sud Sprint, RS 2000, Renault 30TS, Porsche 911 & Renault 20TS (boring). Funny thing is, there was only three of us on the company, though the 911 was a no-no! We didn't have a Cortina on the Fleet. What the Hi Fi industry wasted on cars it made up for in fun!!:cool:

I love Capri's, i had a MK2 3Litre S, my workmate had a Mk2 3 litre ghia bored out to 3.1 fitted with a xpack body kit another mate had a proper RS3.1 which i wish i could of bought when he offered it to me but my apprenticeship wages wouldn't stretch that far back in 87, just remembered another workmate also had a 3 litre as well, we all worked at the same place, must of been capri heaven:D

It harks back to a small spat I had on the Wigwam forum.
I'd just bought meself a pair of re-juved Bowers Active One speakers.
Lovely they were, and I said as much.
This old duffer then posted how he remembered them and how the bextrene mid/bass cones had a severe quacky colouration. He just wouldn't let up ... on & on.
The speakers sounded great of course - it was one of those cases that Marco knows so well where modern supporting kit really shows the best in old designs and old "flaws" just disappear.
Ducks go quack, too, so I just posted up the pic on the thread and we had a laugh about it and agreed to differ. I invited him round to listen for himself, he doesn't live too far away, but he didn't, of course, as he knew better! :rolleyes:

My avatar picture was taken around 8.00pm as the sun was setting on 18th January 2004. The ridge I'm standing on is around 2,500m above sea level in the Andes of northern Chile, the area is known as Puna de Atacama on the outskirts of the small town, San Pedro de Atacama.

I took a year out in 2003/4 to travel around the world and this day was just superb and the picture pretty much sums up that entire year really. Total bliss at 2,500 meters on a wonderful day during the best year of my life, which is never likely to be topped :)

Anyway, as many here post pictures of their equipment, I thought it pertinent to have a picture of a computer hard disk drive (just in case you didn't realise what it was), as I am fully committed to file based audio. It shows the innards with the disk platters, arm and pick-up head. As Chris (TGW) noticed in another thread, it looks like a stack of records - not that different eh? A spinning disk with an arm reading information from the disk, you just can't see it :eyebrows:

File based audio is the future even if we don't want it, at least until people store all their music in the cloud and stream it to smart phones, tablets and smart TV's which will be the central hub. No reason why most of us shouldn't have a turntable and a music server in the furture, then you have the best of both worlds - I predict that within 10 years CDP's will be a thing of the past and no longer manufactured, they will be a vintage niche product and new CD's (if you can find them) will be more expensive than vinyl, manufactured mostly for lovers of classical music.

Luigi Russolo was perhaps the first noise artist.[3][4] His 1913 manifesto, L'Arte dei Rumori, translated as The Art of Noises, stated that the industrial revolution had given modern men a greater capacity to appreciate more complex sounds. Russolo found traditional melodic music confining and envisioned noise music as its future replacement.

The Art of Noises classified "noise-sound" into six groups:

Roars, Thunderings, Explosions, Hissing roars, Bangs, Booms
Whistling, Hissing, Puffing
Whispers, Murmurs, Mumbling, Muttering, Gurgling
Screeching, Creaking, Rustling, Buzzing,[5] Crackling, Scraping [5]
Noises obtained by beating on metals, woods, skins, stones, pottery, etc.
Voices of animals and people, Shouts, Screams, Shrieks, Wails, Hoots, Howls, Death rattles, Sobs
He designed and constructed a number of noise-generating devices called Intonarumori and assembled a noise orchestra to perform with them. A performance of his Gran Concerto Futuristico (1917) was met with strong disapproval and violence from the audience, as Russolo himself had predicted. None of his intoning devices have survived, though recently some have been reconstructed and used in performances. Although Russolo's works bear little resemblance to modern noise music, his pioneering creations cannot be overlooked as an essential stage in the evolution of the several genres in this category,[6][7] and many artists are now familiar with his manifesto.

At first the art of music sought purity, limpidity and sweetness of sound. Then different sounds were amalgamated, care being taken, however, to caress the ear with gentle harmonies. Today music, as it becomes continually more complicated, strives to amalgamate the most dissonant, strange and harsh sounds. In this way we come ever closer to noise-sound.[8]

Antonio Russolo, another Italian Futurist composer and Luigi's brother, produced a recording of two works featuring the original Intonarumori. The 1921 made phonograph with works entitled Corale and Serenata, combined conventional orchestral music set against the famous noise machines and is the only surviving sound recording.[9]

Russolo and Marinetti gave the first concert of Futurist music, complete with intonarumori, in April 1914 (causing a riot).[10] The program comprised four "networks of noises" with the following titles:

Awakening of a City
Meeting of cars and aeroplanes
Dining on the terrace of the Casino and
Skirmish in the oasis.
Some of his instruments were destroyed in World War II; others have simply disappeared.[11]

The idea is that each of the geometric shapes represents a person - they come in all shapes and sizes. Each person sees the sunset in their own unique way and it will trigger feelings and “Images” specific to their personal memories. So the blocks, acting like prisms, reflect these variations to the viewer.

I thought it was kind of apt to use this picture. We all have our own taste in music and in its reproduction, No two people will hear a piece in quite the same way and it will have personal meaning for them, so there are similarities.

My current avatar is a Vanden Plas Princess 4r. This lovely vehicle sports an all aluminium straight six 4 litre Rolls-Royce FB60 engine and had a top speed of 112mph which was not at all bad for a car first produced in 1964. It majored on luxury and sported an interior every bit as plush as any Rolls of the day. I am lucky enough to have traveled regularly in one of these beauties as my uncle owned one for six years back in the 1970's.

At school we had a French Teacher known as "bender Len" due to his appearance in a naturist magazine, who drove an Austin Cambridge. The original Lenmobile. However, we used to "lenmobile spot" and extended the genre to include the Morris Oxford and Peugeot 404. I'm sure this Vanden Plas would qualify as a posh one. We had science teacher who was known as 'Everard' after the Larry Grayson character. We also had an RE teacher called Jonny Beanhead (not his real name..). He drove an Austin Maxi. The gas suspension went on one side giving the car a 45 degree tilt but for reasons best known to him alone he didn't get it fixed and continued to drive around in it. Aside from being an almost certain MOT failure it looked absolutely ridiculous and would have us crying with laughter everytime we saw it.

Select 'Settings'
Look at the links on the sidebar running down the left hand side of the page.
The third box down is 'My Settings'
Select 'Edit Avatar'
Make sure the 'Do Not Use an Avatar' switch is not highlighted.
Work with 'Option 1' or '2' from 'Custom Avatar'
