Keeping my bits clean?

What's the best way to clean the little brush on my V15 IV?

How do you do yours?

I remember this from many years ago, is it really desirable or would it be better to remove it?

I was advised that because I have a medium mass arm (RB300) and the cart is quite complient that I should use it with the brush down, I can't really hear a difference but given that I have quite a lot of charity shop vinyl, not all of it's been cleaned yet either, then it seems a good thing to have, but I can't seem to get it as clean as I'd like it.
