Hi all,
My SME 3009 SERIES II improved tonearm has had the phono plug mod fitted.
Can I ask if it's ok to use standard phono interconnect cables with a separate ground cable? At the moment I'm using QED Qunex cables.
What's you thoughts/Advice on cables.

My opinion - expensive cables make a bigger difference to your bank balance than your sound quality.
I currently am using a Van Damme phono cable with a separate ground lead. Sounds good enough to me.
Another option would be a G1000HD or G1500HD from the like of Mark Grant.

Oh I'm glad someone else is using phono's an separate ground. I was just wondering last night what others were using.
Thanks got the reply and cable advice.
Cheers!

Hi Nathan, as you have phono outs on your 3009 then the way to go is to use phono to phono and a separate earth wire. However what phono to phono is largely down to budget and whether your kit can resolve the improvement. While agreeing that Van Damme tonearm cable is good, I and many others have heard better cables performing, err better for want of a better term  Many on here like the Yannis cables and they are very good. I had Van Den Hul until recently but have changed up to Origin Live Linear Flow 2 as i feel I get better resolution and dynamics. I'm using a rewired and modded SME Series IV. Best way forward is to try a few interconnects and find one you like

Cheers

I also have SME '3009,S2 Imp' with RCA mod, used quite a few different interconnects with it no probs, but make sure you use a sheilded cable with MM Cartridges..

The Yannis cable is superb IMHO. I had a loan of one recently, it was a revelation compared to the Jelco cable I'm using at the moment. Not cheap agreed, but well worth the money.

If I understood the question, it's about the external cable?

Yup - tonearm stereo interconnects, not internal tonearm cable :)

In terms of the designs Yannis makes, you don't have to go for his top models. His entry-level cables are also superb and punch well above their price range, sonically, outperforming some much more expensive designs from established commercial manufacturers!

I'm using this cable below which is a Yiannis cable I believe.

I bought a Mirco Seiki arm which came with a Micro Seiki cable (I think) but the connector on that cable wasn't a good fit resulting in me having to 'wiggle' the cable about sometimes when I lost a channel so I bought the cable in the link which I'm pleased with.

Tonight I tried the MS cable again just to compare it vs the VD cable and there's no question that the VD cable is much better with a far better connector at the tonearm end also the VD cable definitely sounds louder by that I mean the for the same volume setting on the amp then there is more volume with the VD cable than there is with the MS cable and the VD cable has more bass and a really nice clear treble.

Think he does an RCA to RCA version of this cable.
