Whilst vinyl is still my main source, I am trying to sort of my 'desk' system.

Im running a MacPro with iTunes as the library - please don't bother suggesting an alternative to iTunes as I am quite happy with the way it works - version 10 that is not 11, I hate that.

I bought BitPerfect and it didn't work. Apparently a problem with the way Apple insist on permissions means that it doesn't work properly with Snow Leopard. My MacPro is just too old to run the latest system. The software people sent me an unofficial build that works very well - when its running. Problem is, it keeps quitting at the end of one track and refuses to start again. I have to restart to get it to run.

So, until the helpdesk gets back to me I won't use it. Shame, as it sounds pretty good, certainly presents a slightly less 'digital' sound.

Can anyone suggest an alternative that is either cheap or better - free?? I'm not supposed to be spending anything on the hi-fi at the mo!!

Try Clementine, it also has an Android remote app.

Thanks, but they are both players and, as I said, I like the way iTunes organises my music. I am not unhappy with the sound but Bit Perfect improved it a little. I wonder if there are any alternatives that do the same thing in conjunction with iTunes.

What version of BitPerfect are/were you using?

Edit: does it quit at one particular track? Maybe that track has an issue/corrupt?

Version 2. Unfortunately, it seems not to care too much about what music is playing and treats them all the same.!! basically, if I start playing any album, it will play the one track and then stop. iTunes is then unresponsive and I have to restart to get music to play.

I have tried the same tracks again just in iTunes and it plays them quite happily. If it was possible to get version 1, maybe that would work!!

Try Audirvana. Comes as a free program. If you like it you can upgrade to Audirvana Plus. Definite improvement to plain itunes. Easy to set up and runs only with macs from memory. I have it running with a macbook using Snow Leopard and Itunes 10.7
