On the surface it looks near-identical to an SL-1210MK5G... However, it's underneath the hood where it counts! ;)

The question is, therefore, is this a proper 'audiophile grade' direct-drive T/T, a la SL-1200/1210, or just another glorified toy, posing as something more serious, the likes of which we've seen many times before? :hmm:

Hmm. Pioneer generally turn out properly engineered products. This one could have potential. Pioneer are a well liked company, so this TT could hit the spot for many people after a decent deck!

It's a Hanpin. The reset switch on the slider, the crappy collar on the VTA adjust, and the various other switches from their bag of parts all point towards a super oem.

Maybe Pioneer or Hanpin have licensed the technology from Panasonic? If it is in reality a techie under the hood that is probably a good thing as that is a way to get a techie with all new parts.

So, folks, does that mean that this 'Pioneer' is in fact just some generic Chinese pish, posing as a Techy? I guess the only way to find out would be to look under the hood....

Someone who's in the market to buy a direct-drive turntable should take a punt on it and then let us know how good it is or otherwise! :)

It's only a concept product at a show. Probably nothing under the lid/platter. Just Pioneer might be bringing a model out. It all depends if they want to invest a lot of money or take the easy option and base it on a Chinese OEM.

I dont think Pioneer will put their name on a low quality product ever. Remember, Pioneer Kuro, they rather went out of production than to low grade their plasmas to make more money. This can really be a great TT from Pioneer, but it's probably going to cost....

I hope that this isn't like the Audio Technica LP-120 I had one of these b4 I got my mitts on a 1200 mk5 and while it looks very similar to the real techie its not even close to the real deal in any regard. I am worried about what appears to be a built in phono pre amp which will no doubt blow. The LP-120 had one of these as well and while it was switchable the damn thing had smd capacitors in output pcb. Not to mention the wow and flutter measurements were not up to par with a Technics. If this thing isn't made of all plastic & has good measurements I'm sure it will be a fine table. I have some hope for it even though it may be targeted at the DJ market, because Pioneer's CDJs and Mixers are extremely expensive and well made. It seems like many of the Japanese electronics manufacturers have gotten wind of the revival of analog electronics given the incredible success of Korg's re-issue of the MS-20 synthesizer.

All of the look-a like SL1200 that I have seen have what looks like a very 'economical' motor assembly with built-in bearing.
Although the Stanton version does have more poles and higher power and seems to be made better.
It will be interesting to get hold of one if they exist!
